Question about Yamaha V Star Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have a 01 V Star Classic 1100. When I try to start it all it does is makes a whining noise so I replaced the starter and it does the same thing. I took the primary cover off and found that the starter is turning its gear and there is a gear that is next to it that it is turning and then there is a large gear that it is turning behind what i would guess is the flywheel but the flywheel is not turning.

Your sprag clutch is not kicking the starter gear into the flywheel. You need to replace it.

This will most likely mean dropping the engine and splitting the case to get to all the parts involved. Do you have a shop manual for your bike and plenty of tools?

Hi, Timothy your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Hi, Curtis I would love to help you with your engine or chassis noise but I just loaned my brand new pair of listening ears to your local dealer's chief technician so he could take your bike for a test ride and give you his professional opinion and estimate about your noise and repair cost. Starter problem on my 01 1100 classic. first my 2 yr old battery would not hold a charge, but after i put the charger on it, it would start and run but not hold the charge overnite. now my starter doesnt...

first you need to replace the battery with a new one. 2 years is about all you can expext from a battery that is not used every day. sounds like your starter motor is not engaging, this could be from low voltage. Try tapping the starter motor with something metal, gently with a small hammer, sometimes a stuck solonoid can cause this.

I have a 2002 V Star Classic that has whining noise in the engine, with the bike in neutral I hit the throttle and I get a gear or timing chain whine maybe? I don't know. Do chains wear? It has 18,000 miles

if the whining goes away with the more gas you give it, you deed to replace you cam chain tensioner. if the noise stays or gets worse when you give it gas, you need to replace the cam chain.

I have a 2002 V-Star Classic. I recently had new

Why did you have new carbs installed? If the new ones have bigger throats, there might not be sufficient air velocity to pick up fuel when accelerated. The starter problem sounds like the over-running clutch on the starter shaft has oil on it or the chain from the starter to the engine is off/broken. The whine is due to the starter being unloaded and trying to self-destruct from over-revving.

Starter will not turn over dew to buzzing under seat

buy a new battery shelf life is not 2 yrs the only other thing that would have saved this battery is a trickle charger or battery maintainer
