My charging system hasn't worked correctly since I've owned the bike....about 3 yrs. I have replaced every component in the system and some pieces twice. I've been told that there must be a power wire touching the frame somewhere or maybe that the charging system isn't grounded. I am ready to be done with this problem and need your help! I even brought it to an ''EXPERT'' I told him to fix it and he had it for 20 minutes and said oh, it's the regulator rectifier. I replaced it and the problem went away I thought for about 45 minutes anyway. Please help!!! I'd like to know how to check what and how much voltage is supposed to be where so I can check it all over piece by piece.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A couple of tests / checks:

  • +12 on the red / white wire to the rectifier even with the ignition switch OFF;
  • +12 on the black wire from the regulator and to the ignition switch only when the ignition switch is ON;
  • green wires from regulator and rectifier goes to the body ground;
  • connector terminals / pins of the 3 yellow wires from the alternator;
  • high AC voltage (>15) on the white wire from the alternator with the engine running;
  • 12.5 ~ 13.2 VDC on the battery terminal when idling;
  • 14.5 + on the battery terminal @ 4000 RPM.
Postback results of tests.

Charging system

What age is the bike?
older bike will not charge at idle.
you will know if the bike is charging by measuring theu voltage of the battery with the bike and all accessories switched off if it is a new battery it will be above 13V
A dead battery will be about 11V anything under this and it probably will not recover by charging and you will have to buy a new battery.

ok so lets say the battery is holding 12.5 volts if you start the bike and rev it up and it show higher than 12.5 volt your bike is charging note some bike dont charge under 3000rpm.

Good job in re-seating the cartridges into the printer. Try to insert a different known working cartridge to determine if your other cartridge has gone bad.

Stator and reg keep going out

If your stator and regulator keep failing, it's generally caused by an overload. Have you added any extra lights or electrical gear to your bike? If so, you may be overloading your charging system. If your bike is equipped with a 42 amp system and when you've got all your stuff running it's drawing 38 amps, your charging system is working to almost capacity to provide the current that is being demanded. This causes the components to run hot and they fail. My advice to analyze your current needs on the bike and look for a system with higher output capacity or take some of the current demanding equipment off the bike. Cycle Electrics builds a "three phase" alternator kit that works well. I've installed several of them and never had a problem. http://www.cycleelectricinc.com/

Did you replace the battery or charge it back to capacity?

If your battery is not at full charge or isn't supplying the correct amps to the electrical system, every time you key your CB it will drop the voltage and other electrical components will stop working - or not work properly.

Make sure that your battery is fully charged and the electrolytes are at the proper levels.

If you put a new battery in your Gold Wing, did you buy the correct battery? A cheaper battery will most like cause problems with the electrical system.

Keyless chuck is stuck open

That can happen if the jaws inside the chuck, usually 3 triangular pieces get jammed together. With chuck facing down tap chuck several times to loosen jaws. If that doesn't work spray a small amount of WD-40 into chuck and try again
