10W40 semi synthetic is best the quantity is normally shown on the engine cover on Yams. My little yam and my Suzi SV have oil level windows in the right side engine cover. These show marks for low and full. Open the oil filler make sure the bike is upright and fill to the full mark,.start the bike run for a little while and recheck/refill as required. Keep checking over a few days just to make sure.

Most bikes 500cc and over have an oil capacity of approx. 3 to 4 liters.

I use and recommend Castrol Syntec motorcycle oil 10-40wt for your bike. Should hold about 1 1/2 quarts. Buy 3 qts when your at the store, then youll have some for topping off. Start by pouring in 1 qt (after oil has been drained and new filter installed) then check dipstick w/ bike level on level ground. Keep adding a little at a time until dipstick registers full....Good Luck to you my friend....Tim

SOURCE: yamaha xj900 back firing through carbs can you

could have an air leak in the carb boots or bad air fuel mixture. check the spark plugs, if they're black system is too rich. if they're white, they're lean. either have an air leak going to the cars or just need adjusting. also inspect your air filter.
