Do you have the map checked (enabled) on the map screen? At the main menu, press the tools icon, then the map icon and then the map info button. You should see the Europe map listed. Make sure it is checked. If it isn't, then the map will be turned off. Once it is enabled you should be able to perform searches for places in Europe

you can get the manual at www.garmin.com
you'll also need to get yourself a usb cable... the normal end for the computer and i believe the other end is called a mini b connector.

SOURCE: Garmin nuvi 200w can't update all 49 lower states
OK, I just finally am getting through all of this myself.
First, the bad news. You cannot load all of the lower 49 states onto your Garmin 200W as-is. The map file is over 1GB and the 200W only has 991MBs of memory.
So, go out and get yourself a SD card. I got a 2GB card at OfficeDepot for $8. It was at the counter, not back with the other cards they carry (Note: The speed showed as 60x. The slightly more expensive ones, $12-$15, may be faster, like 150x.)
You'll also need to get yourself MapInstall, available from the Garmin site. BUT, don't try to use this right away, a mistake I made. If you do, you basically get a message that MapInstall can't be installed because it's not already installed. Seriously.
BUT, MapInstall GETS installed, or whatever, when you load your 2010 maps (or partial maps), so after you do your partial install, THEN you can install the MapInstall program. (May not be necessary, but remember, I did this out of order. Look for a "Garmin" folder under your Programs, or All Programs, and see if it's already there after you install your 2010 maps.)
Next, run MapInstall. The next mistake I made was that at the window where it finds your device, I clicked on the NEXT button. DON'T. Notice that your device is shown in a drop-down box. Click on that, and you can select your SD card for the destination.
THEN click NEXT. On my system, it appears as if it shows you what IS already on the 200W, and lets you select whatever you want to add. I put everything else available on the SD card.
I just this minute finished loading "the rest" and checked it out. Works flawlessly. I easily found a seafood restaraunt in Anchorage (Alaska was not loaded in the intitial install.)
Just remember that you have to keep the SD card in the Garmin at all times to use those maps. That really shouldn't be a problem though.
Hope this helps eveyone.

The solution to the "No detailed maps that support routing" problem can be found at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6197735-no_detailed_maps_found_support_routing
To set up a map on the micro SD card you can follow the instructions on http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps Don't download directly to the micro SD card as it won't be recognised by your satnav. Download to the computer and install from the computer to the card as described at the above link.
