I'm a newbe, have garmin nuvi 205w, minimal instructions. I charged the navigator, but when I turn it on and push menu, it says 'downloading maps,' but nothing happens.

you'll also need to get yourself a usb cable... the normal end for the computer and i believe the other end is called a mini b connector.

not entirely sure what you mean.... the usb cable is to allow you to update the gps via your computer and the internet.... you can also use it to charge the gps from your computer... usb has a + 5 volt power to it. similar to a phone line (tho that is +12 volts i believe).
Read the instructions .... hook it up in your car... and enjoy
