SOURCE: Valve Timing and Head Tension

line the second mark on the flywheel up in the hole on the left cover that is top dead center, that tensioner i believe you have to prewind to bring it back take the bolt out and use a small screw driver and wind it back in and leave it in there untill you put the cam back in and bolt it down. make sure you use caution when removing the bollt from the tensioner it is spring loaded. the cam sprocket has lines or dots they will need to line those up with the gasket surface make sure there is no press on the valves that will be top dead center comp

SOURCE: Honda CRF 100 timing

Turn the motor over clockwise until the punch mark on the gear lines up with the arrow mark on the side case. Check to be sure that the cam lobes are facing to the rear of the bike, if they are pointing toward the front keep going until they face back and the punch mark aligns up with the mark on the case.ab798e0.jpg

Check the cam gear to make sure the two marks on the gear are level with the surface of the head.

Buy the factory shop manual

Note these engines appear to spin a bearing I think on the vibration damper countershaft and blow through the side of the engine. If you hear any different noise out of the engine, shut it down and take it apart. Mine started at about 2000 Hours

SOURCE: Setting carbs and setting valves

around that year , yamaha used small disks(no screw adjustment) for valve adjustments, so you measured the free play and bought new ones according to the gap.best set up is just a few 0.001" of an inch at tdc

Hi help needed please , st1100 ,I removed both heads as gaskets had gone , now when iv come to time it back up as book says pistons hit off valves on right hand bank ,, I'm at my wits end please Help

I doubt the book has got it wrong, most likely explanation is a difference between the way the book is expressing what is needed and your own interpretation.

I suggest you revisit the book and try to develop an understanding of what is happening to everything as the engine revolves until you know what to expect and then with that mental movie playing in your mind the instructions might make more sense.

It isn't unknown for a timing mark to be so poorly engraved as to be difficult to see and some Honda timing gears or flywheels have several marks for different purposes so mistakes are easily made.
Obtaining and using a degree disc and setting the engine and cam(s) per valve timing diagram provides an alternative timing method.

X25xe noisey lifter

Sounds like a bad lifter or a bad lobe on a camshaft. Not real familiar with the brand, sometimes you need to pull off the valve cover if it is a pushrod design and check with fingers on rocker arms while engine runs.

But if this is an overhead cam you would need to pull the camshaft and look at cam lobes. Then look for flattened lifter face. Some overhead cams can have lifter discs to adjust gap between lifter and camshaft. Some of the old VW engines used this system. It worked pretty well, but you needed discs on hand to make precise changes.

Hi , I have an GCV 160 Lawmower from 2005. Trying to statr it pops and give bangs, but will not run. How likely is it that the flywheel or ignitionmodule is defect?? I can see that scraping marks on...

The legs of the ignition module should not touch the flywheel. It needs to be set to the proper "air-gap." Get a standard sized business card, fold it in two to use as your "gap." Loosen the screws on the coil and turn the flywheel to where the magnets inside it are pulling on the legs of the coil. Put the card in between them, letting go of the coil and retighten the screws. Most proper "air-gaps" are between .010" - .014". A business card is about .010" but will compress in size, when folded in two with pressure from the coil legs on it. Post back if more help is needed.

How do i set cam position and timing on an old yamaha xt 500

You didn't say WHY the cam / valve timing needs to be reset. For some reason I get the feeling someone told you that resetting was needed and so you are asking how. Obviously, you may have installed new pistons and that is why the resetting is needed. In either event, when the cam timing is set the valve timing is also set. Other than adjusting valve lash, setting the cam sets the valve timing. Below is a web site where you can do a free download of a factory service manual. The process is not hard but having a manual will be more help and faster help than I can give online.
