I have a 1985 cabriolet that drives well on the highway, but as soon as i have to down shift into second gear the car dies. even when the car is warm and has been running it seems to becoming more frequent that the car dies at stop light / down shifing etc. as long as i have my foot putting pressure on the gas, the car stays running. also, the rpm, gas, temp and radio will stop running, then start, then stop etc. a little frustrated.

You'll have to get it checked. Its going into limp mode. When this happens you have third gear and reverse. Its to get you somewhere to get it fixed. You can damage the tranny worse driving a lot while its like that

You can be sure you have engine damage now. There is not just one thing to check. It needs to go to the shop ASAP before you drive it anymore.
Possible damages
Cam bearings
Main bearings
Rod bearings
Cracked rod and main caps
Bent rods
Damaged Piston and wrist pins
Damaged cam
Broke springs
Bent valves
Damged crank
The list can go on. So that is be best advice to give.

Check for vacuum leaks. Also try cleaning the ISV.
If that doesnt work go to vwvortex.com and post your issue there

In 2001 the "Check Engine" light might give information about what's going on with the transmission. You may want to have it checked by a shop before the transmission decides to die. It might be a simple fix.

I have same problem (87 1.8 Carb Clipper), thought it was rust from fuel tank getting in Carb, changed the tank and fuel filler pipe but still have problem (but not as frequent). I'm gonna get it tuned (mixture and timing etc), also try fuel pump relay and check choke.....fingers crossed.
