If the shifter is moving from Drive to Neutral, then I would think the shift cable is in need of adjustment or the detents are worn out. I would suggest letting a transmission shop look at it for you.

Check this RECALL for 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT

Summary:
On certain sport utility vehicles, if a driver has not placed the shifter lever fully into the "park" position and leaves the vehicle running, the vehicle may unexpectedly move rearward after seeming to be stable.
Consequence: Inadvertent movement of the vehicle could result in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will install a secondary detent system to the floor shifter assembly. DaimlerChrysler sent interim notices to owners concerning this problem on March 22, 2002. Owner notification began September 23, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

I additiona at TSB previous, I suggtes check Neutral Start/Back-Up Light Switch (also called Neutral Safety Switch)

To replace the switch, simply unbolt it from the transmission, disconnect the wires and install a new switch.

Fig. 1: Except on the AW4, the switch is screwed into the side of the transmission (click image for zoom)

Fig. 2: Neutral start/back-up light switch removal on the AW4 (click image fo zoom)

    ADJUSTMENT
    Except AW-4 Model
The switch is not adjustable on these transmissions.

    AW-4 Models

    (see Figure 3)

Fig. 3: Neutral start/back-up light switch adjustment

        Loosen the adjusting nut

With the transmission in neutral, rotate the switch to align the neutral standard line with the groove on the valve shaft.

Hold the switch in this position and tighten the adjusting bolt to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

Bend the tabbed washer over the retaining nut.

        Connect the shift linkage rod.

        Connect the switch wiring.

Check the switch operation. The engine should start in
        P
        and
        N
        only.

This and other details could find in the Repair Manual: ZJ-1993-Service-Manual-Secc-21-Transmision (if you need this section or another in english, send me a comment with your email).

    Hope helps.

My 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee is falling out of park. How do you adjust the automatic transmission shifter to keep it in park?

Bushings on the transmission linkage and possibly adjustments on the linkage. There may be other issues, such as key related release. I don't agree this is a DIY situation. You leave it in park and it rolls down the hill toward a kid in the street?

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee shifter stuck in park

Could be the brake light switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park. Sometimes there is a button or tab near the shifter to unlock it in an emergency. Sometimes you can take it out of park if you turn the key but not to the on position.
Your owners manual should have these procedures, and you can do an internet search for the process to take the console out if needed.

Have a 93 grand cherokee laredo awd .. let the kid take it out and he said he slipped into a curb.. the truck runs with front wheels only now and when in park it will move.. any idea what he has done to my...

Have him tell the truth about the story you posted. More damage was done for too many parts and mechanical faults are noted here by you. If he ran into a curb he had to be speeding at least 25 MPH and slamming the shifter into park to break the parking lock which is a heat treated arm that locks into the transmission clutch drum upon placing it in park.
