Whinning sound tranny?

I just bought a 2003 Malibu for my daughter's first car and am trying to see if the tranny fluid is topped off. It sounds like it's whinning a little. Shifts smooth but feels like it wants a higher gear (auto) but the tach looks right?... any ideas? thanks, Mark

When does it whine? I would recommend a fluid change along with filter.

Rear end making a whinning noise

check the fluid level in the rear end. there is a plug in the differential, take it out and stick your finger in it to see if it touches any fluid in the case. You can also check it with a flashlight. If the differential gets dry the gears start to shine as they are being scorched from heat due to low fluid. Might also want to check the rear wheel bearings. A transmission that has a bad bearing can sometimes transmitt the sound through the drive shaft and makes you falsly believe it is the rear end when in fact it is the tranny. So is all is good then have the tranny fluid checked and possible have a transmission shop look at it. this type vehichle has a history of tranmission failures.

2002 Chevy Malibu with a 3.1ltr enging and a 4 speed automatic trans. The trans has a whinning sound when driving. It's not slipping and shifts correctly. It just has a whinning sound. What could the...

The most common whining noise from that tranny is the transmission pump. Sometimes they have a high pitch whine noise yet nothing wrong its normal. Sometimes its an indication of the pump being over-worked due to a dirty filter or fluid low. Turn engine on and check tranny fluid level. If low add to cold mark on dipstick, check for leaks under vehicle. If fluid appears very black or burnt smell, recommend flushing fluid and replacing filter (located inside tranny pan) yours will be a 4L60E type tranny.

2003 chey malibu does not start

This car has a switch on the steering wheel post that hooks to the key by a linkage. It sounds like that switch is going bad. My daughter had one that went out gradually and it took a while to figure it out. It is much cheaper than a starter!
