Can't move shifter out of Park after starting engine on my 2000 Taurus. To drive the car, I have to stop the engine, turn the key back slightly, then switch to Neutral and restart the engine. What's up with that?

Hello, You are having problems with the Interlock controls. There is an Electric switch at the top of the Brake pedal lever that makes the car stay in Park UNTIL THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PRESSED. Because you are not in Alignment with the switches, you are using Neutral instead.

The most likely culprit is the switch I mentioned under the dash. Many people have broken it or knocked it off the holder. The second issue is the Alignment of the Ignition switch Interlock rod or cable. This part is raised or lowered by the Ignition switch and when you turn the Ignition switch, the rod moves. The part that the rod moves is an Interlock switch.

The Interlock switch can also free up your shifter. Also, if the Trigger on the shift for the console is not properly aligned, you will have similar release problems. It is another Interlock problem.

I was driving my 2000 ford taurus when I came to a complete stop but when I went hit the accelerator the gas would not go.So I turn the car off and it would not start in park but it did start in neutral....

This Sounds Like The Linkage On The Gear Box Has Changed ,The Lever Is Not Reaching The Correct Position When it Is moved to park ,Drive, Etc.
Check The Cable ,Linkages From The Change Lever To The Gear Box

Elantra won't start and moves when it's in park

I'm going to say something happened to the cable between the shifter and the transmission. There is a switch on the transmission that prevents you from starting the engine in anything other than park or neutral. The transmission is probably in reverse or drive which would allow it to roll.
Someone would need to check the lever on the trans where the shift cable is attached.

Shifter is locked

put your foot on the brake and hold it there when you turn the key and move the shifter this could be a safety not allowing you to move the shifter.

Can't move the shifter out of Park after starting engine on my 2000 Taurus. To drive the car, I have to stop the engine, turn the key slightly back, move shifter to Neutral and restart the engine. How...

This might sound strange, but check your stopping lights and make sure they're working. If I'm not mistaken, this model had a stop light "feature" that prevented the car from moving from the park position if required lights were blown out.

The other problem could be your pawl in the transmission. Sometimes, if you don't use your parking brake, a groove can shave into it. This is usually if you are often parking on an incline, in which you should use your parking brake to avoid pawl grinding.

I'm sure you checked for nobs or release buttons, but I figured I would mention it just in case. I know my car has one, but if you drive this car often...I'm sure you knew it was there to begin with.

Good luck!

Cannot remove ingnition key from my 2000 mercury mystique

Car thinks it's still in gear. The park shift interlock is activated. This is a safety feature that won't allow key to come out unless vehicle is in park. Try this see if vehicle will start, if it starts run gear selector through all gears then turn off try to remove key. Let me know how this works
