Are there switches on the brake or gear shifter that would prevent a 2000 Eclipse RS 4 cyl from starting? Problem occurs intermittently.

Problem is intermittent. Sometimes starts fine for days. Then sometimes when trying to start the car nothing happens, doesn't turn over, solenoid click, nothing. Seems like if the brake is depressed and/or the shifter is moved to Drive then back to Park the engine will likely start.

SOURCE: insdie lights flash on and off,car skips, sometimes it wont start

Bad earth circuit, check that the battery is grounded, and any other ground connections. ( ground = chassis/body of car) Asmost of the electrics are "switched" on the + side and the indicators are switched on the - side then the grounding is "forced" through the indicator circuit, giving you on/off electrics, check all connections and clean any rust, re connect and cover with vasaline to protect.

2007 Pontiac Wave. Shifter lockout engaged. Power windows won't work. Dash lights also out. Was able to unlock shifter with a small screw driver and get car home. Ignition key won't go into park.

There is a shift solenoid that functions when the brake pedal is depressed. When the ignition is turned on and the brake pedal is depressed the shift solenoid pin retracts allowing the shift to be placed into gear. Using a screw driver only depresses the lever to move the shifter to place it into gear. The ignition key will not go back into park because the pin on the solenoid is extended preventing the shifter to be put into park. The solenoid must be replaced to get everything back to normal.

Where is the fuse for the gear shifter on a 1997 Honda Accord Station Wagon EX

First, what is exactly happening? as there is no fuse for Gear shifter.

Is the car not going out of park? If so, then check the Brake switch. Brake has to be depressed which operates the brake switch sending signal to the gear shifter to unlock so it can be shifted. If Brake switch is okay then only a mechanical obstruction is preventing the shifter operation. For this you will have to take of the cover on the gear shifter to see what is fouling.

When I turn the ignition switch to start the vehicle I often cannot shift the stick shift out of Park. If I immediately try to switch gears after starting the engine it usually works but if I leave it more...

.
Shift Interlock System
The shift interlock system prevents a shift out of PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed. The shift interlock system has a shift lock actuator mounted on the floor shifter assembly. If the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the shift actuator will allow the shifter to be moved out of PARK only when the brake pedal is pressed.
Electroniclly controlled !

Condition Possible Sources Action
  • The shift interlock system does not release or lock correctly
  • Fuse in battery junction box (BJB)
  • Check fuses.
  • Brake pedal position (BPP) switch
  • CHECK the BPP switch. REFER to Section 206-09 .
  • Floor shifter wiring and/or connectors
  • Transmission selector lever
  • Ignition system
  • Go To Pinpoint Test A .

1999 Lincoln continental car wont move in gear

1,.Make sure your key is inserted all the way into your ignition switch. It if is not, you will not be able to move the shifter. Make sure it is all the way in by turning it to the "Run" position and waiting for the engine to engage.
2. Press the brake pedal after you start your car and before you try to move your shifter. Most cars do not allow you to move the shifter if you are not pressing the brake pedal.
3. Clean the panels around the shifter. Often these can accumulate dirt or sticky debris that can prevent you from shifting into gear.
4. Remove the console cover over the shifter by unscrewing the corners and popping it off. You can then make sure there is nothing underneath preventing you from shifting.
5. Press the override button at the base of the shifter if it is not working properly.

Transmission wont engage. Theft signal is on.

The tougch pad on the door has no effect on the transmission. The theft system will prevent the engine from starting, i wonder if you mean the shifter will not move from park ,into gear. If so turn the ignition just slight forward from the lock position , but stop before any of the dash indicators can on, now with your foot on the brake see if you can move the shifter into nuetral, if so then you can start the truck and put into gear.

Shift gear is stuck on park and can't get it out of gear.

Hi there,

There are multiple things that must all happen in order for the shifter to move from park.

1. Make sure the key ignition switch is in the "Run" position (the position just before the "start" position).

2. Brake pedal is depressed (usually pushed in a couple of inches or more at least to release the button on the shifter).

3. Push in the button on the shifter and pull back (you may need to push the shifter slightly forward or back a little for the button to move freely).

If the button on the shifter still doesn't push in freely, there is a problem with the mechanical lock-out linkage or electronic switch that releases the button lock. Check under the dash area along the brake pedal arm for anything that doesn't look correct.

4. If the car is on an incline/slope/hill, it will put a lot of pressure on the parking pin in the transmission. Usually a strong tug or pull on the shifter will pull it out while you're pushing on the brake pedal to prevent rolling when it releases. Make sure to set the parking/emergency brake first to prevent this next time .

Good Luck!!

Thanks

Shifting Gear is Stuck in ''Park'' position

u will need to check and make sure the brake lights work, the shifter is tied to the brake light switch, if the brake lights don't work or the brake pedal is not pushed a gear shifter lock out is engaged, this is a Federally mandated safety feature.
