If you got smoke this is NOT a good thing! Get a Good Auto Electrician to check ALL your vehicles wiring as electrical smoke means something is burning! Simple rule, Fire plus gasoline is NOT a good idea!!

I did a smoke test on my 1996 Chevrolet 1500 5.7L and smoke was coming from around the air filter would that be a vaccum leak?

It depends on where you had the smoke tube plugged in to the engine, and what you were checking for. If you plugged in to a vacuum port on or near the throttle body, but didn't block off the air inlet to the throttle body, you will of course have smoke coming from around the air filter. Watch some YouTube videos on smoke checking an engine -- you will see how they do it for checking for leaks. It varies depending on whether you're checking the intake manifold gasket, the evaporative emission system, etc.

this sounds like oil rings are worn or broken and that would need all rings replacing, have you done a compression test? if not it would be helpful to do one and compare when hot and cold,

Check your oil level? If not do that 1st and get back to whoever did the maintenance NOW before the engine blows. Because it sure sounds like they did something wrong.

hi,
I've the same probem, it's been 'fixed' twice in the cars life but re-occurs.
I believe the throttle body gets 'gunked-up' possibly due to a faulty solenoid or sensor.
I don't have a full solution but will post when I do.

Mazda Tribute Intermittent Starting problem

I can think of 2 possibles,it could be a bad battery cable or an intermitent short in the starter solenoid, check or have the battery cables and there connections on both ends first not only are they a cheaper fix but the problem you describe sounds like a current flow issue.Test them with or have them tested with an ohmmeter they should show o ohms resistance, and while not attributed to the problem I do not reccomend using Bosch spark plugs of any variety, the best plugs for any Japanese vehicle are NGK's,this comes from my personal experience with them and other techs that I have worked with.
