I'm getting a loud growling noisec coming from the torque converter. sounds like something is broke on the inside. Would like to fix it myself , to save money.
Just got laid off from work and have to use everybit of money toward essentials. I'll have to try and figure out how to fix this myself. I can't afford to hire a mechanic right now. sorry to trouble you!

It can be done but a word of caution is thgat if the converter went out it may have sent small bits of metal into your tranny.....so it may be risky to just replace the converter...........

This could be one of two things. We will first start with a wheel bearing. When you are driving, does the growling noise get louder as you go faster. Some times is will sound like you have a helicopter flying beside you depending on how bad the bearing is. The second thing that could be causing the growling noise is your transmission. There are also bearings inside your transmission that could be causing the noise. If you have a cvt transmission, you have a 120,000 mile warranty and can have it repaired at no cost to you. You will just have to go to a nissan dealership.
This indicates the transmission is leaking internally - it cannot maintain line pressure to shift. If it shifts out of first after about a minute of driving it means that the seals inside the case and the band brakes are wearing out. I went through that and found it wise to install a rebuilt unit - if it is a front wheel drive unit then the transmission and differential are in one compact unit. If the torque converter growls or groans it means the front oil pump seals and pump are wearing out.
theres a good chance that it broke the main shaft in the tranny from to much pressure forcing it back, be honest i would look for a good reman tranny and if your having problems with the starter to close to the torque converter they make shims for the starter to avoid that problem.
either the torque converter is breaking up inside or the flex plate that holds it to the crank is broke or breaking around the bolts that hold it to the crank
Check out these things: rear wheels locked up because of emergency brakes coming apart inside rear drum/rotor.
Rear axle broke
4x4 controls switched half on-half off.
Torque converter broke
All of these problems will not make much in the way of noise. You will need both rear wheels off ground and trans in neutral to turn the rear wheels. If they turn its likely the torque converter.
