My rear license plate lights were off, I found they had been disconected under the bumper. I connected them, started the car, they work but now my gas guage reads empty, the empty lights on, and the battery warning light is on. The alternator seems o.k., unplugging the lilcense lights did not fix the problem, either. I've cheked all the fuses. I'm baffeled! I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy. The rear license plate lights were not working. I discovered that they had become unplugged under the rear bumper, I plugged them in, started the car, the lights worked but now the gas guage reads empty (it is 3/4 full), the gas warning light is on, and the battery warning light in on. Check that there are no holes in the float. If the fuel is getting into the float, it will give a false reading. Another thing is to check the ground on the float sensor. If it's not connected tightly, it will create a false reading too.
I would check my oil pressure gauge and the oil level as well. the fuel level guage also malfunctions on those models so make sure it is working properly and not floating from full to empty that will cause the light to come on as well as overheating of the engine(low coolant levels)low oil level, low fuel level, and low charging volts from your alternator.if all is well suspect a short in dash.
You can take out the part of the dash where the guages are and change the little sensor/fuse behind the fuel guage, they should have a replacement part at orileys or autozone
A loose connection on the sending unit could cause the problem but also moisture in the tank in cold weather could also be a factor in which i would add fuel line antifreeze to a full tank of fuel..........Hope this helps you out.
One of two things but only one safe reliable repair. 1. Loose faulty connector on top on fuel sending module/pump - repaired with a new plug. 2. fuel level sender inside fuel tank is defective - repaired by replacing fuel module. To kill both birds, replace fuel pump module. It will come with the new connector and new sender.
The sending unit has issues. You'll probably have to drop the tank to reach it. Once you do, reach in and pull out the sending unit. Be careful not to break any of its wires. Best bet at first is to clean up the contacts and terminals (and anything else electrical) with electrical contact cleaner, then plug it in and see if it reads correctly. If it doesn't, you'll need a new sending unit.
