Shifts hard at first (when tranny is cold) then seems to shift fine. Checked tranny fluid level and it was low by a few quarts. Could this have been the problem or am I in danger?

This may have been problem[low on fluid] may be time to change that trannny fluid and filter. if you choose to do this , i recommend that you add lucas tranny treatment to the fluid change also w/new tranny filter. this frees up any sticky valves in your tranny. allows smooth shifting, and works well wlth any fluid for fords/chevy's or jeeps. the lucas will eliminate the hard shifting, been there done that issue. also the hard down shifting you did'nt mention. although you may have not noticed. add the lucas and your hard shifting issues should be gone. thank you for choosing fixya.com

Your transmission holds about ten quarts of fluid...However, the last quart and a half are the most critical as without them the filter ca pull in air that can easily cause internal clutch and seal damage.
How much damage is impossible to know without actually taking the unit apart.
I do recommend that you locate the reason the trans was low, and stop that leak. It's also a good idea to add lucas trans sealer and conditioner...it may help mitigate any damage and if it's not too bad you may get more use out of it.

Would start by checking linkage or the cable that runs to tranny. Tranny fluid level is correct? Check fluid level first. Run 15-20 mins and check with motor warmed and running

I have a 1993 mazda miata mx-5 5 speed manual tranny. I have a hard time shifting when the tranny is cold there are times I can't shift I.to reverse. I can put it in first but with alot of muscle. but...

Check the fluid level in the transmission. To do this, from under the car remove the fill hole on the one side. Transmission oil should just trickle out the fill hole when properly filled.

If it's low or you're uncertain what's in there and want to make sure the correct fluid is present, you'll need a bottle pump. Mazda calls for 75w90 GL4 and 2 quarts are need for a complete fluid change. Not a bad idea if you don't know when it was last done.

Have the fluid level checked, low fluid can cause this problem. Only check fluid level when the ****** is hot. NEVER COLD

Shifts in and out of over drive and shifts very hard in all other gears

this sounds like your tranny is low on flewed if your vehice had a dipstick for the felewed check it to see if its low if it is make shour that the vehicle is on level grond and fill the tranny to the full mark onthe stick (remember if your cars engine temp gage is on cold fill to the cold mark)

to fill the tranny fill it little bit by little bit not all at once and have the engine running while filling after putting in a bit of flewed get in the car and shift threw all the gears slowly then check the dip stic and put in a bit more if needed and shift the gears agane and do this till the tranny is full wate a few minits then shift the gears agane then take the car for a short drive around to see hoe itshifts threw the gears

i hope this helps

94 Bronco Tranny issues. Shifts hard from 1st to 2nd, drove it in the morning and all was fine.. drove it in the afternoon and the tranny was acting up with the speedometer working occassionally. What to...

As easy as it sounds, if you haven't done it already, just check your transmission fluid level. A low level will cause hard shifts, and sometimes some slippage in the transmission. The difference in the 2 trips could be just how hot the transmission fluid gets during the type of driving you do.
