sounds like your evaporator is clogged (check if water drains from under the car when the a/c is on). there should be a way to remove your glove box (squeezing in the sides or unscrewing) and you'll see the access door right behind it
I don’t know what these other people are reading, what they think you’re driving, why they’re posting directions for an Equinox, or pictures for anything but the 2001 Malibu does NOT have a cabin air filter! It did NOT come from the factory with one or a pace to put one.
Source: I own a 2001 Malibu LS and have turned almost every nut and bolt on that car.
I have the same problem right now. I am going to buy a new gas cap (since that is the cheapest possible fix) in hopes that will be why it's on. I am getting the code P0455 and that is a possiblility. fingers crossed. LOL
The cabin air filter is located behind the glove box, you will have to remove the glove box, behind the glove box is a cover about 1" high and 7" long, remove that cover and you will see a tray that holds the cabin air filter, remove the tray and you can replace the paper cabin air filter, I recomend using a Toyota cabin air filter, the Toyota cabin air filter is a HEPA air filter and is available at any Toyota dealer for about $ 30
