There is no reset for the computer. It will not detect a dead battery and it will not loose it's memory. You need to have your charging system checked. You either have a defective battery or the alternator is failing and is weak.

Before replacing the battery make sure the connections at the battery are clean. Also inspect the battery cables closely. If you see a bulge in a cable replace it. If all this is well and you replace the battery and still have the problem look to a weak starter.

Sounds like a dead battery

  • Anonymous Jan 30, 2011

With a dead battery, you should not be boosting or
    jump starting your vehicle.
A vehicles electrical system needs a good battery,
fully charged before using the vehicle or performing
    any testing.
I think your expecting too much on the message center
and from the cars computer. It doesn't tell you anything
    nor self diagnose it's self.
I have noticed lately that people see enough left in
an old battery to light the dash up and are in denile
that the battery could be bad.
All those lights only use tenth's of one amp currant
where as a starter uses up to 300 amps to turn
over the motor,so don't get overwelmed by todays
computer technology you still have a vacuum pump
and basic electricity as 50 years ago.
All the computor stuff is 5 volts. low current like
    your notebook.

Dead battery boost

Try charging it with a trickle charger. It might come back.
The alternator circuit is tricky and requires some battery power to excite the electromagnets in the alternator to start producing power.
It may or may not have been triggered by the boosting battery.

Battery drawn dead over night.

There are a lot of things it could be, like you said. You could try testing them one by one with a short circuit/continuity tester like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Sperry-Instruments-CT6101-Continuity-Tester/dp/B000GL7GJG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392099595&sr=8-1&keywords=continuity+tester
Or a multimeter at the continuity setting (looks like: ))).
For the inspection, I disconnected my battery and it reset the computer. However, they told me I needed at least 50 miles of history on it before they could pass it. Just make sure you have driven it for a few days after you disconnect the battery so the computer has some emissions history and you should be fine.

ok, no head lights, that means the battery is dead.
head lights are hot all the time, (safety) if they are dead
diagnosing HL is simple to do.
voltmeter to battery, oops 10v. bad. charge it.

many times leaving lights on, kills the battery for ever.
camel and straw deal.

1: dead battery , not 12.6v.
2: fuses blown. (in engine bay fuse box)
3: battery lugs corroded real bad.

My 1999 likes to get angry with it's anti theft system. With the key in the ignition cycle the power locks three to four times, that will normally reset mine and let me start it again. As for the battery going dead, mine has the rear doors instead of the tailgate. The rear door light switch went bad and left the rear cargo light on and that kept draining my battery untill I found it... Good luck, hope.i have helped some.

a desconected relay will not drain the battery, you might have some other issue. start the car using boost and then check if your alternator is charging around 14 volts
