I've owned our 99 Grand Caravan for 3 years and for 3 years occasionally all instruments would quit and I would pound on the dash and it would come back. About 2 years ago the abs quit and the abs light stayed on constantly. About 2 months ago the abs light went out but the abs still doesnt work. I have noticed that the transmission does up and down shift at lower speeds incorrectly. A year ago the check engine light came on and the transmission shifted extremely hard and I replaced the transmission input speed sensor and the light went out. A few days ago the check engine came on and the scan tool showed a P1698 code, which indicated, " No CCD message from TCM, no message from the transmission control module." Do I have to replace the transmission control module or is there a loose connection some where. Tim

The most common is a bad cluster
you have to remove it
that could be a pain but it can be done
after removing the cluster remove the cardboard cover in the back remove circuit panel board and check in the middle for a broken weld here your question for your insterment panel
The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is not communicaring with the PCM.
Check all fuses. It could be a power or ground problem or a ccd bus communication wiring problem.
If not it's likely an internal failure in the TCM.
You may be able to get a schamatic at your local library.
If it's not a power, ground or wiring issue you should take it to a dealer with a DRB III to confirm the diagnosis.

"while driving the 1999 dodge grand caravan,

There is a known problem with dash cluster solder cracking in some of the Dodge vehicles in and around that year. I would recommend removing the dash cluster and re-heating solder on the main connector joints on opposite side of circuit board/cluster. Use a small soldering gun to be more precise where you re-heat. Simply hold tip on spot until you see it puddle again, then let cool. I did them all to be safe, but you may see the cracked one or few by simply looking close with magnifying glass or similar. If you google it, there are even videos out there as well as pictures to help. ( dodge dash cluster soldering ) is one thing to google.

Why would the dash lights and controls quit working

Possible battery problem. Check your connections, have the battery checked. All free at local auto store. Had same problem, all instruments on my dash went dead. Installed new battery, problem went away.

This might not be your problem, but it's an easy place to start.

Instrument panel lights out on 01 Dodge Grand

These vans have had issues with the PIN connections to the instrument clusters. With time the solder on the main PIN connection will begin to fail. The good news this may be repaired at home. First you'll need to remove the instruments. To do so remove the dash components from around the instruments then the (4) screws) that hold the instruments in place. Carefully detach the wire connection from the back of it; take to a well lit area. Look for a PIN with a failed solder joint (this will appear as a slight black or grey circle. If found apply heat and let solder be gin to flow; the allow to cool and reassemble. If you look at my history you'll see I've helped others with this issue. INTERMITTENT !! No power to instruments or starter

I had this problem with 99 Durango and went to AutoBeef.com and learned that this problem notorious for 98 & 99 Durango. After reading all the entries I was encouraged to replace the PCM "Brain". The site also listed the name of an online company that sells brains for <300.00. It was so easy to fix -- I had my brother and son help me to remove 3 screws and replace the brain. The guys from the online company that sells computer brains told me how to do it (Florida Based company -- can't remember the name but you can google)

My dash quit

Try removing the 10 amp fuse for the body control module for 20 minutes. Had same problem and thought it was the whole cluster. It reset after doing this and I have had no problems since. On my 99 Caravan it is the fuse mounted sideways by itself at the end of the underhood fuse panel.

1998 Dodge Grand Caravan. Whenever the ABS warning light comes on, there seems to be some sort of short that causes the rest of the instrument panel to die. No illumination, no gages working. When the ABS...

I had the same problem. Abs light would come on and I would lose all dash instruments. Hit a bump on the road and abs light would go off and dash would come back on. What I did to fix problem, lol I slaped the dash just to the right of instrument panel and it all came back to life. There seems to be a short there, and I slaped it back 3 times in a week and now for the last month it has stayed on.
