Always check that all frame ground and body ground wires are clean and well connected. Sounds to me like whoever replaced your fuel sending unit did not connect a ground to it very well. A single bad ground can make an electrical system backfeed and cause a lot of things to go haywire. I've seen this happen many times and re-connecting the ground wire after a good cleaning fixes it well.

SOURCE: 91 deville fuel gauge flashes "E"

It seems that you are low on fuel based on you saying 70 miles in the range gauge. If this problem does not happen with 3 gallons of fuel or more then it is normal. The range is calculated on your average MPG and gallons of fuel in the tank. When the car gets to around 2 gallons it does not chance miscalculating your miles to empty and leave you on the side of the road. At this point he tank will read "E" to let you know it is time to fuel up. The flashing "E" is simply cadillac's way to get your attention that you are in fact low on fuel and need to take action. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Erratic Gas Gauge

You need to remove the tank and replace the fuel pump as the sending unit is part of the pump assembly.

Replaced fuel pump now fuel gauge isn't working

sending units get knocked out of calibration when they change the pump.(carelessly).if you can.. check the top of the tank, to see if they plugged it in firmly. if not, raise heck till the change it. (doubt they will). other than the wires, not much you can do, without dropping the tank.

My gas gauge on my honda civic ex 2000 has been broken since ive had it. it reads at over a full tanks all the time. however the temp gauge next to the gas gauge works perfectly and all the other gauges....

Sorry, but that is the problem and is HIGHLY recomended...

Take it from me, this unit is submersed inside a tank of fuel.
There are electrical wires in there that could have a problem and cause a serious explosion.

The fuel tank will need to be removed, usually this requires draining it first. Once removed, the old float and sending unit are removed, a new one installed and new gasket seal rings replaced.

Totatly worth having it done.

If you cant afford to go ahead and pay the man what he is asking, be careful hiring some shade tree mechanic with less knowledge or experience with it.

This problem in a Ford is caused by a defective fuel gauge sending unit inside the fuel tank, the tank must be removed to replace the sending unit.

Fuel gage not working. Only a smsll light seen. Does the fuel pump need changing?

As long as the car is running fine it's safe to say the fuel pump does not need to be replaced. However the fuel tank sending unit may need to be replaced assuming the fuel gauge itself isn't at fault. First check your owners manual if available for your fuse block info and check fuses then I'd look into the sending unit. Let me know if you need help with that

My dodge will not read the fuel level. I have had the car worked on for this problem and it still isnt working. The mechanic said the dealership would have to fix something else for the problem to be...

You didn't mention what your mechanic "worked on," but this problem is usually due to a failure of the float/sending unit that's located inside the fuel tank. Replacing the float assembly requires dropping or removing the fuel tank, so many mechanics shy away from it.

Low fuel light comes on at idle. Yes, there is a 3/4 to full tank. Idles fine at stops and has excelleration.

Hi, A common problem with these trucks is the sending unit mounted on the fuel pump in the tank. The sending unit is a variable resister which tells the gauge how much fuel is in the tank. this resister is not made very well, my sending unit failed after 5 years. I waited till my fuel pump failed(2 years later) replaced the pump now my gauge works great.
