I have a 2002 ford focus and the car will not move in reverse. It moves forward in drive only, but won't kick into overdrive. Any ideas

Sounds like its internal, like the reverse band, that applies the overdrive, or the clutches that apply when in overdrive, either way the reverse band and overdrive clutches work hand in hand, for overdrive and reverse... id say you need a rebuild or a junk yard unit.... :( sorry for the bad news.

I want to know what the three wires on the overdrive lockout switch do.

one will be earth the other two to the others stop you engaging overdrive in lower gears.u can extend wire and move switch to dash you can bypass lockout giving overdrive in all forward gears but engaging reverse with overdrive on will destroy the unit so not a good idea if the moved switch on dash is easier to miss

bad transmission. if it shifts through gears going forward but will not do anything in reverse it is most likely a bad transmission. reverse is usually the first gear that goes out .

Transmission problems

Automatic? It won't move in overdrive, drive, 2, or 1? If it won't it sounds like a burnt forward clutch. You have tried all these positions?

2001 Ford E250 transmission has no reverse gear, when placed in reverse, the vehicle drives forward. Is the transmission faulty, or can it be a lesser problem?

I would check the shifter and the linkage. Even though the shifter lever is moving, that doesn't mean it's moving the linkage on the transmission.

the reverse clutch has failed in the transmission, this will require the trans be torn down for repair.
