Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

1997 pontiac sunfire, brand new battery, car wont start. cant even get it to crank when i turn the key. ive found various websites saying it might be a problem with the theft system. so far none of those solutions have worked. tested the starter at autozone and oreillys, both passed teh test. after putting the starter back in, the car turned on 2 times in a row, then went back to the problem of doing nothing.... any ideas?

have you checked your starter solenoid?

  • par sims Nov 13, 2010

You could turn the key on then short it out sounds like it could be suspect?

  • redhotchi485 Nov 13, 2010

would the starter solenoid be bad if it started teh first two times , then quit working?

  • redhotchi485 Nov 13, 2010

any idea on how to check for this?

  • par sims Nov 14, 2010

yea it can come in go sometime eventualy stopping for good. if you have a voltage meter you can check the output when you turn the key. you can also test the resistance if you can find out what the normal would be. if you dont mind the gamble you could just try to replace it. its only thirty dollars but it is on a list of alot of things it could be. you can also check to see if it is getting the twelve volt start signal goin to it if you have a voltage meter it would be the two small wires goin to it like i said it should be getting twelve volts to it. if its not getting the twelve volts then for some reason the car computer is not letting it start and it could be the theft system or some other problem like low oil or something. there are a ton of reasons why the car will not let itself start.

Starter wires on a 1997 sunfire

Sunfire keys are not chipped therefore there is no learning process that needs to be done. The 3 10 thing is a waste of time. The ONLY theft deterrent in this car is the starter cutout through the passlock sensor circuit. It may also cut out the fuel pump, I can't remember. Also you were probably damaging your starter by holding the ignition to start giving it power too long and overheating and damaging the starter internally. To learn a new key to a cars computer with a "chipped" key (not the Sunfire) you just turn the ignition to "on" then "off"....etc.do not hold it in start for the recommend amount of time.

02 pontiac sunfire won't crank at random times

Hi, I had the same problem with my girlfriend's 97' sunfire, it wouldn't start so I jumped the starter terminals which I think screwed it up even more (causing the theftlock light to come on). It turns out this is a common problem that can be solved by hooking up a GM Tech2 scanner, going under "body" codes, and following the instructions for bypassing the PASS LOCK SOLENOID. Hope you find this helpful, Byron

2001 pontiac sunfire wont start

I have had the exact same problem. There is an ignition lock that probably went off. There is a fuse box under the hood. The fuse that says ignition on it pull it out and put it back in. This should reset the ignition lock. Its a safety feature because the car thinks that someone was trying to tamper with it.
