The last couple of weeks I noticed that it takes longer for the heat to come out of the vents. Then the hot needle went to hot then normal then hot then normal back and forth. We bought a thermostat. My husband noticed that the fan is not turning. Does it turn all the time? Or just when it gets hot? The radiator is fine and not the cause of overheating. No steam coming out ,just a fluctuating needle. We didnt replace the thermostat yet. Should we?

does it only get hot when you're idling? And does it then go down when you are moving again?

I would change the thermostat and if the gauge still acts up you may want to check the gauge, the fan is hooked up to a senor and will come on at a certain temp, usually when it gets hot. Hope this helped Tim

My cougar is overheating today sporadically, going from normal to high and back as I drove today. I don't see any signs of leakage or hissing in the engine compartment area, indicating a hose problem. ...

sounds like your coolant level dropped enough to empty the heater core and your engine was not getting coolant up to the cylinder head, check the coolant immediatly and fill then idle in the driveway till fully warm and you should notice the leak

I got a 94 chevy cavalier. it was blowing heat just fine last night but when i went to start it this morning i noticed it wasn't blowing. its been cold and vary snowy the last couple of days if that helps.

if the fan is blowing and you have no heat and the car runs at the normal temp range then it would be your heater core needs to be replaced,if you have heat and its not blowing it would be the blower motor needs to be replaced ,or the switch is faulty.

AC/heater vent only blow out hot air

that switch controls a vacuum operated door that lets a/c or heat thru.when accelerating, the vacuum in the engine changes so it sound like a vacuum issue.take apart the center stack and there is a vacuum actuator in there connected to the flap door .i have seen those have issues with the metal tab broken away from the plastic that moves it.is the a/c piping cold under the hood where it goes into the heater a/c assembly?the compressor should be cycling on and off and the pressure tested.
