My spedometer will work when car first turns on for a maximum of 5 minutes, then the speed shown will rapidly drop and rise about 5mph of my actual speed, then will drop to about 0mph, then vary between 5-30 mph. My vehicle also has these mini stalls where it seems the car is not in gear and the rpm meter is showing about 5500rpm and the engine revs real loud. I had a diagnostic test ran and autozone told me it was the Speed sensor, so i changed the speed sensor located directly on the transmission, by front left tire under the hood. I drive a 1996 Mercury sable. I don't know what else to do, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Would that cause my vehicle to stall, etc? And where would I look for one of those?Would that cause my vehicle to stall, etc? And where would I look for one of those?

Hello
This problem is caused by a defective instrument cluster and it must be send out for updated parts and repair of defects in the design. Although the instrument cluster in this truck uses what looks like analog instruments it is actually digitally controlled by a small computer inside the cluster assembly, this same computer it seems sends the signal to the cruise control as well, so if the speedometer needle is getting a faulty signal then the cruise will act up as well. There are many places on the Internet that can do this repair, you are not stuck with the dealer who will 2X the cost of the repair of the cluster to you (capitalization in all it glory). These companies will send a special box to ship the cluster in and provide full instructions on removal.
Below is one such link to a cluster repair service, give them a call about your particular problem.
If you dont have an external coolant leak anywhere under your hood that has shown up on your driveway it could be the intake manifold or the headgasket leaking. Also check the thermostate to solve the heat issue.
you'll find one wheel speed sensor dropping out in front due to build up of rust scale between hub and sensor remove speed sensor ypull notice scale, clean and reassemble.
You may be low on R134a and need a simple charge. As the Compressor cycles, the low side pressure drops and if it drops to far it will cut the compressor off till the pressure rises again. The high pressure side rises and the low side drops, but when it drops to far since there is not enough R134a in the system you get the on off cycle. The other cause to this is a bad pressure switch, or bad expansion valve, and moisture in the system as it ices up in the lines and pressure builds causing the pressure switch to cut the compressor off too. Re-cap, try recharging the a/c system for now since it's still working. Good luck and keep me posted. Be glad to help.
Let me guess, it goes up to about 30, stays there, and if you go faster (past what would be the halfway point of your speedometer) it starts dropping below 30. It sounds like the type of speedometer that uses two magnetic cores at 90 degrees to each other, and one has gone out.
