On my way home last night car went from having this problem to normal again. I drove for 20 more minutes to my house and it was fine. So today I went out started the car and it ran for about 5 seconds and died! tried a few more times same thing. Then tried again and it started and ran, but still getting same messages. I have checked ground wire from battery to block and it is ok. I did notice my inline fuse holder (not the fuse,it didnt blow) i have between my battery and my amp was completely melted and it is a big 4 gauge inline fuse. any suggestions? also i know this was completely stupid but i ran my remote wire for the amp to the ignition fuse (also not blown). i couldnt find anything else that was only hot when the ignition was on.

This is an issue with the speedometer unit itself. Replace the speedometer with a good used one and keep the reciept to reflect "actuall mileage". Let me know if you need anything else like instructions or further info.

Why does my 2006 HHR get 10.5 mpg?

You could try the old fashioned way of checking your mileage. Start with a full tank of fuel. Make a note of the total mileage on the vehicle. Drive the vehicle normally normally until the low fuel light comes on. Refill the tank to full and write down how many litres/gallons you put in. Next check your total mileage display again and write that down as well. From those numbers you can work out you fuel consumption.
Subtract you first mileage number from the current mileage number to get your total miles driven. Then it's Miles driven divided by gallons of fuel used.
As most European pumps measure in litres you'll need to divide the total litres you used by the number of litres to the gallon. Then you can divide the mileage done by that number.
*Note* The American gallon is smaller than the UK 'Imperial' gallon so make sure you use the correct one.
[ UK = 4.55 litres to the gallon (Imperial)].
[ USA = 3.78 litres to the gallon].

What could happen if fuel sending unit goes bad?

All that happens is your fuel gauge will not work. It could read empty or full all the time depending on open or closed circuit. It won't affect the running of the motor but may affect any electronic readouts such as MPG, distance left until tank empty etc. if you have them. The most annoying thing may be the low fuel warning being triggered.

I have got a 2005 Equinox and I'm getting horrible fuel mileage ! Like 7mpg in the city and 17 to 21 mpg on the highway , I've put new tires , battery , original equipment spark plugs and wires and still...

There are many things that could conspire to rob mileage. My first thought was possible transmission slippage. Although your city rating is horrible, the highway mileage is just a little off. 23-25 hwy is correct, 23 for lousy doped California gas, and 25 elsewhere. My guess is that you have slippage but above 45 mph, you are still getting advantage once the converter lock takes effect in overdrive. Just slippage until you reach that lock point.
Start with a full diagnostic of all stored codes in the ODB II computer, both for the engine and the transmission, then an evaluation of your transmission from a good shop.
Good luck, the Equinox is a darned good car,and worth the effort.

REPLACE 02 SENSOR

Sometimes the short trips are not representative of the actual MPG. When a low tank has a few gallons it can skewed the Distance To Empty figures. The first 8 Miles can take a Gallon, until all the sensors warm up. You had probably 4 Gallons(19 MPGx 4=76 DTE). Now you have 2.5 Gallons left (19 MPGx 2.5=47DTE) to 2.8 Gallons (19 MPGx 2.8=55DTE). So for a low tank you can see that the DTE falls in the middle of the approximate DTE you stated at 50.

Long-term, you should probably clear all Codes with a free scan at Autozone, Advance, or Oreilys autoparts. Sometimes a Code is picked as the Dominant code and there can be another that has not malfunctioned enough to set and stay.

Also, the old malfunction could have reduced the efficiency of the catalytic converter either temporarily or permanently. It will take quite a few miles for the build-up caused by the rich mix to burn off.

The wires going to the new O2 sensor are also important. The O2 sensor has a heater in it to quicken the change to a lean fuel mix. It needs to work and attention paid so that the O2 sensor is not blamed for a bad wire.

How do I reset the distance to empty

The DTE is automatic and is the result of your previous miles per gallon multiplied by the gallons of gas registered in your tank.

Unlike the Trip miles, this DTE number can not be reset. It will vary by the fuel mileage per gallon recorded at each startup. That is why if you filled the tank and showed 400DTE you may have had 20 Gallons multiplied by 20 MPG. But if your new average is 16 MPG then it would show 320 DTE.

The display reads 14 mpg how can is be in proved?

You cannot rely on these mileage displays. To know for sure fill the fuel tank up and write down the mileage on the vehicle at that time. Drive the car until you have 1/4 fuel in the tank. Fill the tank and note the amount of fuel it took to fill it up. Divide the gallons necessary to fill it up into the miles driven since the last fill up. You now know the mpg the car got. Example: You drove 300 miles and the car used 16 gallons of fuel. 300 divided by 16 equals 18.75 mpg.

91 deville fuel gauge flashes "E"

It seems that you are low on fuel based on you saying 70 miles in the range gauge. If this problem does not happen with 3 gallons of fuel or more then it is normal. The range is calculated on your average MPG and gallons of fuel in the tank. When the car gets to around 2 gallons it does not chance miscalculating your miles to empty and leave you on the side of the road. At this point he tank will read "E" to let you know it is time to fuel up. The flashing "E" is simply cadillac's way to get your attention that you are in fact low on fuel and need to take action. Hope this helps.

How many gallons per hour does this car lose?

hey
at the begging u should clarify how many gallon u used.
112 miles at 28 miles per gallon --> 4 gallons burned (112/28)
So that means we leaked 11 - 4 = 7 gallons

Now figure out how long the car was driving.
112 miles at 64 miles per hour --> 1.75 hours

So, leak was at a rate of 7 gallons in 1.75 hours
7/1.75 = 4 gallons per hour leaked.
