Most likely the fuel sending unit, within the fuel pump assembly within the tank....theres a replaceable printed circuit card within the tank which always gets dirty\worn out and contaminated....its very common on malibu's Cavaliers, sunfires etc...tank has to be lowered to replace it

If my fuel gage on my 2005 Chevy Aveo doesn't work, how do you fix it? This started @ 78,000 miles

If your mileage has dropped to half, I would be worried about what is wrong with the car. Chances are it is running very rich and using way more fuel than it should.

2005 Chevy Malibu the gas guage has stopped working. The guage will go from full to empty over and over. The gas cap light comes on and now my engine light is on constantly. How do I get this fixed for...

hey the reason your gas gauge is going from full to empty is that your fuel pump which is in the gas tank has a sensor that relays how much gas the tank has in it, the sensor is gone bad and will have to be replaced. And your engine light problem is probley due to putting gas in the car while it is running, my wife has a 2005 malibu and we have had the same problems with her car hope this was helpful

2002 chev malibu gas gage gose to empty E with a full tank of gas

its a problem with your sending unit most likly. its in your gas tank and tells your gauge how much gas is in your tank. I had a chevy truck and a blazer and both of them had this problem. I believe its a problem with all chevy models in my opinon. I would most definatly say that its your sending unit.

My 2008 chevy malibu fuel gauge dose not read only some times when its a full tank the gauge is dead but about 1/4 tank it reads but gos in and out ?

this is caused by a defective gas gage sending unit, the sending unit is part of the fuel pump module inside the gas tank, the gas tank must be removed to replace the fuel pump module that also contains the sending unit.

Gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!
