The timing is not settable in a traditional sense of the days of distributors. The spark timing is controlled by the computer. If the computer is getting a bad signal, your spark timing will be off. Generally, a mis-fire isn't caused by bad spark timing. A sticking fuel injector, a bad or improperly seated spark plug wire, or a bad sensor will cause your mis-fires.

Misfire on my Impala was caused by bad spark plug wire on the back bank which was getting a regular shower of antifreeze from a bad intake gasket. great design huh ?

2001 Chevy Impala 3.4 I just replaced the fuel pump and now when I turn the vehicle over it backfires and will not start what would cause this

Why did you replace the fuel pump? Sounds like that might not have been the issue. Timing is what causes a back fire. The timing could be off from the crank sensor or it could be a lot of other things.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

Multiple random miss fire

Now change the distributor. Get one from salvage or e-bay. Did the timing belt jumped a tooth or is it new. Vitally
