Need to know what is the removal procedure of the heater core on 2000 jetta vr6.

  • Anonymous Mar 27, 2010

    dear mangofever,
thank you for your information about the removal procedure of a heater core on a jetta, reason I do believe it needs a replacement is because it leaks underneath the dash and it fogs all the windows up.

well to sum it up you have to remove the steering column, outer dash cover, then dash framing, then the heater box, then disassemble that to remove the heater core. you will also have to discharge the a/c refrigerant and disconnect those lines as well as the heater lines first. its about a 10 hour job for an experienced tech. but why do u think it needs replacement?

Alright that sounds like a pretty easy one. i'd just hate for somebody to spend all that time replacing it if they werent positive it was bad. such as a heating issue etc.

More than likely heater core leak, I assume you are losing coolant. I've changed a couple heater core in my life but nothing like changing the one in the video. I saw 3 videos, and all said you have to pull the dash.

04 VW Jetta GLS heater core instuctions?

If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
f74-01.gif The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core. Heater Core
  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

I have a 1997 vw jetta with the vr6 in it, and the heater core was recently replaced because of a leak, but now, that is fixed, but the car is overheating and shuts itself down after a few minutes of...

Ouch, don't let it overheat it'll cost you a new head gasket. You probably just don't have enough coolant. They probably filled it up and didn't run it to drain the reseroir and refill it. Check the coolant level, make sure it is full. Failing that, the thermostat might be stuck, the rad might be clogged if it's old, the new heater core might be the wrong one a too restrictive. I can't rememebr if my old VR6 had a ad cap but if it does take the coolant cover off the rad, start the car with it off... don't worry it's won't spit of anything, look down to see if the fluid is moving, if it is then you have circulation. Dont' run it like this for too too long as it will begine to Overflow. My bet is the coolant level bro. Cheers.
