normally should take 6-8liters when empty. If it is making those noises keep a tow truck on speed dial.Dodge does not make a very strong transmission.Could be that you just need the bands adjusted but I suspect you either need to rebuild or replace it

You would add transmission fluid type ATF-4 to the transmission at the place where the transmission dipstick is located on the driver's side of the engine compartment. If there is no dipstick but instead a plug that says dealer use only you need to take it to the dealer for them to check it. If it is low or the pan is leaking they may try to get you to spend $200 on a flush and fill but you could still do it your self for half of that. If you have the 4speed transmission (on the 3.3l engine) the filter is about $10 and it will take about 5.5 quarts of fluid when drained. If you have the 6speed transmission on the 3.8l or 4.0l engines you will need to go to the dealership for the filter $30 and make your own gasket with RTV silicone. It will also take about 5.5 quarts of fluid when drained. Make sure you have several hours for the fluid to drain and then a day for the RTV silicone to dry before refilling. Then have the dealer check the level again. Good Luck.

On the bottom of the auto transmission there is a belly pan, this pan must be removed to drain the fluid out of the transmission and replace the internal fluid filter. So you will need a large drain pan to catch the fluid and a floor jack to raise the van and safety stands to support it while you remove the bolts that hold the pan on, there is no drain plug so this is a VERY messy job. Clean off the old gasket completely, use no sealer and use a high quality trans pan gasket, the dealer is best or you will have leakage problems, tighten the bolts to 12-14 pounds of torque with a torque wrench, this is very important.
