You must remove the oil pan.. I suggest you purchase or borrow from the library the Chilton manual for your car brfore you start this process. Take pictures of every step as you dissassemble so you have a record of how to put it back together.. (first step Drain The OIL)
Sorry to tell you the bad news but I have to. Please do not loose time to try turn the engine. You cause more problems inside the engine. Since you cracked the oil pan and you drove the car since it died, you seized the engine, you manage to turn the rod bearing on the crank shaft and the rod as well because there was no oil to avoid friction. What you should do? Ask an expert to check your car and give you the correct advice. Do not try any more to start the car.
Uhh there are no rods in the head. That dealer has a loose rod in his head maybe. The crank, rods and pistons are all in the bottom end of the engine. What it likely is is either a broken piston skirt or a spun rod bearing. Spun crank bearings are rare and sound deep. A spun rod bearing can be fairly quiet on idle depending how bad it is worn out, but it will be really loud on acceleration. Piston slap from a broken skirt can be pretty loud too but it mostly sounds like diesel rattle only a bit less. Some have described it as a loud pinging sound like detonation. Drain the oil and check for metal debri. If you can tilt the vehicle a bit for the oil to drain more towards the drain hole that could help. Then look for metal pieces and judge their size. There should be NO glitter whatsoever in engine oil, or any kind of debri. Now a rear end or transmission is different. Those always have a little metalic sheen to them. Best of luck.
It has happened to me that, when ordering parts, i was given .025 oversized bearings after ordering standards. take it back apart, and double check the bearing marks. if they are what you ordered, use some micrometers or plastigage, and get the correct set.
my 2001 mazda protege starts hard, idles low and high at various times (never normal) and it acts as though its going to stall at all times. sparks and wires are changed no help, changed air filter no help. any idea on what to do?
The idle on my 2003 Mazda Protege started acting strange one day - it kinda surged forward a little bit. Then the RPM would drop and kept wanting to stall out. It stalled out at a stop sign. The check engine light came on. I drove it immediately to my Goodyear mechanic. It ended up being the Idle Air Control Valve. They had to order the part from Mazda which took 3 days to get there. The whole thing cost $700. Runs great now (again).
