Question about 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Speedo does not work but the odometer does. As I drive the vehicle it begins to work properly. I already tested the speed sensor and it checks out fine.

Its the gage cluster. Order a new one and replace it all will work properly. Its just old and needs to be replaced.

The speedometer provides speed information based on a speed/distance pulse signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). The VSS is mounted on the speedometer driven gear in the transmission.

Does my 1996 honda accord have a vehicle speed sensor

most old cars have a speedo cable.
is the odometer dead too. (we need that answer now)

there are 3 class evolutionary systems.
cable
electric sender to cluster
and sender to PCM and PCM drives cluster.
but honda does this on diffr, dates than most cars. (i learned)

so lets do that. we login to alldata.com and look , so can you at any time,
once a month i do random cars.
what engine, sometimes this varies by engine, and trans.
neither stated so Ill toss coin each time.
a/t trans.
1996
has electronic (hall) speed sensor VSS and runs
engine, cruise. odometer and cluster.

the 96 has no speedo cable, and works in modern mode, very advance for this time
also any scan tool on earth fits the PCM scan port
and if VSS is dead, it tells you that with a DTC , vss dead.
saving all that work wondering why it dont work.
see/?
PCM must see it work
and cluster
and cruise
if only cluster fails, and both speedo and odometer then its bad.
if only speedo fails but not odometer , then speedo meter is bad.
its that easy.

Speed odometer

LSI 4cylinder or 3cylinder? engine. , all answer USA cars.
all answers now, are 3cylinder

did the odometer quiet too?
key fact
and in USA< connect any scan tool and see if VSS died.

the usa 96, 1.0L 3cyl has the VSS sensor in the speedo
and when the cable snaps, Speedo to transaxle flex drive cable.
snamps
the speed goes dead
the odometer goes dead
and Vss goes dead.
easy huh, if all 3 are dead.
but if speedo ONLY goes dead, that means ITS dead.
vss= veh.speed sensor. or MPH sensor.

Transmission vehicle speed sensor

Are you trying to test it for accuracy? If so, yes it's possible but you'll need special equipment to test it, plus you need to remove it from the vehicle (depending on year, it changed a lot from 1983 to 2013, add a year in the comments will be helpful).

Your simplest option is to drive some known distance and check to see if the odometer reads that you traveled the same distance, or drive beside a friend with a good speedo and see if it matches yours. Or, most GPS systems will calculate your speed too.

1998 subaru legacy 2.2 engine problems

Yes.
The speed sensor in the transmission gives the computer data to control fuel mixture and timing, and it also drives the speedo and odometer.
The sensor would need to be tested.

1990 pulsar hatch odometer not working

you must the VOM +logic sense for troubleshooting.
1) check the connector for proper installation and corrosion.
2) check the wiring circuit for any shorts or open. If this test do not isolate the problem, the speed sensor will be tested, and depend the sensor your have.
Most of them use magnetic pick up : use jumper wire put the ignition in RUN,this will cause to Odometer to change.if there are NOT change the sensor is faulty.
However you can run the scanner and computer TEST, for bettr result. or you can go to www. autoelectronico.com this web is spanish translate, i strong recommend you by powerful information update complete, you can download diagram etc, in PDF, try it and fix i.t
God bless you

1991 S-10 Blazer speedometer, odometer not working, all other instruments work, cruise control also works.

Speed sensor has failed.

It is basically a magnet sensor that reads the RPMs of the tranny.

It is screwed into the side of the transmission.

Do you have an aftermarket alarm installed, or remote start?
Sometimes those wires can be damaged if not installed properly.

It is $33.00 at autozone.

It may be a faulty speedometer with a short inside, or a short on speedometer wirings or connector.

Whenever car vibration cause the wiring to short, there you lose speedometer and trans functionality.

You need to access the speedometer connector and wirings to
instrument panel to fix this.
