My alternator belt is as tight as it can go and is still squealing, but it is a new belt recently. What can I do? I wonder if I was sold the wrong belt originally, so that it is slightly too big to tighten anymore. Any ideas? I have a carquest 7355 xl / 10A0900 Gates Belt

Since your post just says 97 Nissan Pickup I cannot be specific. But, generally:

  • if the belt adjuster/tensioner is at the end of it's adjustment then you need a shorter belt.
  • Make sure there are no foreign materials on the pulleys or new belt
  • If it's an automatic belt tensioner it might have to be replaced

The Gates belt is a good quality. The belt length is good - if you can snug it so that it has no more than a 1/2 inch play (movement) when tested on its longest open space. IMPORTANT: A new belt should not require more than 50% of the available adjustment span on the tensioner or belt tightener screw.

Squealing will occure if any of the following exist:
1. Belt is too long
2. Belt has oil or grease on it
3. Belt is wrong thickness (3/8s or 1/2 inch, etc.)

Tell us what you have found!!

85 chevy celebrity. replaced alternator. that one squealed 2. got another. still hear a squeel. does not squeel when belt is off.

ALTERNATOR BELT NEED ADJUSTING AND REPLACING IT GLAZED. WHEN DRIVE BELT GET GLAZED SHINY CAUSE IT TO SLIP AND SQUEAL.REPLACE ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT. AND ADJUST IT DRIVE BELT TENSION BY TIGHTEN THE UNTIL YOU CAN PRESS DOWN ON THE BELT IN THE LONGEST RUN. YOU NEED TO PRESS DOWN BELT AND GET A 1/4 TO 1/2 INCH DEFLECTION IN BELT.THE BELT CANT BE TOO TIGHT WHERE WHEN YOU PRESS DOWN AT IT WONT GIVE IN NONE TOO TIGHT, WILL CAUSE PREMATURE ALTERNATOR BEARING FAILURE IF DRIVE BELT TOO TIGHT.

How do I stop my v-belt from making squeeling noises on my Toyota Echo 2004.

Squealing is usually an indication of belt wear. Check the underside of the belt for worn or "shiny" spots. If it's worn it's slipping and is most likely not only the cause of the squeal but could impact the charging and cooling systems.
If the belt is in good shape and/or has been replaced recently, it may just need to be tightened. All new belts develop some play after initial installation after they have "broken in". If the belt is in good shape and is tight, the problem most likely lies elsewhere (bad bearing in waterpump or power steering pump, or alternator) I hope you found this post helpful. Best of luck! Hi:
I would suspect that the problem is your alternator belt is not tight enough. You can't judge it by just eyeballing it, as when the alternator needs to charge the battery or when you initially start the car, it has quite a load on it, and often slips for a bit if the belt isn't tightened to the proper amount. there is a tension guage that shops use, but you could tighten it up a bit and see if it helps, and go from there. too tight is bad too, as it can cause premature wear on the tensioner and alternator bearings.
