Truck runs great but the oil pressure gage goes zeros out

Truck runs great but the oil pressure gage goes down to zero and the check gages light comes on. Then the needle goes back up and it turns off. Is it the oil sending unit and where is it located?

Did you find the sending unit and was that the problem?

  • Anonymous Nov 22, 2009

I was told the sending unit is at the back of the block. It is very difficult to get at. My truck is doing the same thing and I was told I should try to clean the connectors to the sending unit and the unit its self and if that don,t work to replace it.

It is on the left side at the back of the block .You will need a 1 1/16 sending unit socket,it is a deep socket.I also bought a mirror small enough to see back there. The unit was 53.00 and the socket was 13.00. It took about 20 mins ,but solver the problem. Pressure is steady.

If you jump battery positive to solenoid terminal s the starter should kick in and crank, if not run a separate ground from battery negative to solenoid base if nothing changes check the neutral safety switch with a test light (not a voltmeter). I hope this helps. Take Care.

Recently replaced intake gaskets, engine has 332000 miles on it. Before this problem I had very low oil pressure. Now when oil heats up oil pressure goes to zero. Check gages light comes on.

Hello Marty, I suggest you install an auxiliary mechanical oil pressure gauge to see what the true oil pressure really is and go from there.

The check gages light comes on and off while driving, at the same time, the oil pressure gage drops and then bounces back up after hitting zero

There a couple of possibilities; you could have an intermittent oil pressure switch or an intermittent stepper motor in the instrument cluster. The stepper motor drives the gauge.

My 2000 Jeep GC laredo had the same problem. I changed the oil pressure sensor (I think that is what it is called) and it now reads really high on my gauge but I havent had any more problems and I dont get that annoying ding when it hits zero anymore when I let off the throttle. In case you dont know, the sensor is located on the passenger side of the engine back towards the fire wall. You just have to disconnect the wiring harness and use a large socket to unscrew the sensor. Once you locate the sensor it should only take 5 minutes to replace. Hope this helps.

Owner of 2004 Ford F250. Check engine light came

Check the fuel regulator at the end of the fuel rail. If if is not functioning properly it can cause the the problem that you are describing. Unfortunately other than doing an R&R with a known good regulator I do not know of a fool-proof test for this component.

Oil gage drops to 0

You may have a bad oil pressure sending unit. The kit they are talking about, I believe is a rebuild kit, not the entire pump. Usally the kit consists of a couple rotors and seals. You would take the old parts out the oil pump housing, and install the new ones. But you want to make sure that all the clearances are within specs. I'd try the sending unit first.

After oil change, pressure gage drops to zero and check gages light comes on after running for five minutes. oil is still full though.

Remove, check and replace the Oil Pressure Sensor. It should be located adjacent to the Oil Filter.

All you have to do is replace your oil pressure sending unit. It`s in the rear of the motor by the left head. This is the drivers side. You need a special socket to remove the sending unit.Good luck.

Gages

Yoyu dont mention the mileage on your Yukon but low oil pressure will indeed light the CES light when it reachs o psi. Have you checked your oil? Have you changed your oil and filter. High mileage and poorly maintained motors will eventually wear out and develope low oil pressure. A tempary cure would be to use a higher weight oil 20w50 will get a few more miles out of the old gal if indeed the cam, main or rod bearings have reached their service limit.. Good luck
