The rear differential leak on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The rear differential seal on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 is wet to the touch (but not dripping on the driveway). Is this as simple as draining, removing the bolts and the existing seal, replacing and refilling?

Thanks! I think so the leak appears to be on the right (passengers) side of the differential case
gasket. I will get it cleaned up tomorrow so I can
locate the true source of the leak.

There is some work involve in replacing rear main seal, seal sit in the rear of the engine block, the transmission will have to be remove, and the fly wheel to get to the rear main seal.If you have never removed a engine or transmission, it might be best to pay and have some one do it for you.

Leaking seal left side rear; does bearing come off with axle or stay in housing and do you have to pull the differential cover and pull the pin to release axle?

Bearing stays in the housing but check it for wear...often the seal leaks because the bearing has too much play. Yes pin in diff needs to come out.

Noise in differential while driving

Most of the time, a whining noise from the differential is an indication of a worn rear end or low on fluid. Low on fluid would also indicate a worn and leaking gaskets seals. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to answer any more questions you may have.

Rear diff problem

The only place you did not mention is the pinion seal (at the yoke where the driveshaft connects) Any leak from a differential should be fairly obvious...clean everything off well and drive it, You should see seepage somewhere. Any grease on the wheels or new fluid where you cleaned will tell you where to look. If it is at the pinion seal, If you haven't done this before, don't...you can disturb the adjustment inside the gear case and damage the gears.
