Fuel pump might be deprived of power by the immobiliser or a relay or bad connections or wiring. The circuit will need checking through but the fuel gauge is likely to have a different circuit, though the two might have a common ground connection.
check your fuel pump relay. if not that, then it's your fuel pump. the gas gauge is in the fuel pump, so if your fuel pump stopped working, your gas gauge won't work
If none of the gauges work, there is a power problem. The gas tank sender grounds the fuel gauge and the temp sender on the engine block grounds the temp gauge. Could be a wiring harness issue or a problem with the printed circuit board too.
Normally no. The fuel gauge reads by resistance, the position of the float in the fuel tank, that voltage is directly sent to the gauge. There is also usually a warning light that operates off of this same system but it reports when the float level is extremely low only.
If the gauge isn't working, you may want to inspect the wiring harness at the fuel tank to make sure everything is intact, nothing frayed, pulled loose, or broken under there. If the pump has been replaced, sometimes the fuel float gets into a bind when installed improperly.
Usually the only other thing that has an impact on the fuel gauge is the ground circuit to the dash display.
A mechanical fuel pump works off a lobe on the cam, usually. I have seen these cams wear down to the point that the fuel pump does not operate correctly. A quick test is to; remove the fuel lines from the pump, plug the oulet side of the pump with your finger, install a vacumm gauge on the inlet side and crank the engine. The gauge should show good vacumm and you should feel pressure against your finger. If none of these exist then you should replace the camshaft.
Disconnect and replace fuel filter. With filter disconnected have someone momentarily turn key to on position to see is fuel pump is working.Make sure you have lots of rags,a drain pan and safety goggles on
fixed it, it was the crank shaft sensor! Thanks!
