If the vehicle is fitted with an immobiliser that could be the problem. Have you checked for a spark?

If an immobiliser is fitted the new engine ECU will have to be coded before it will work.

A wiring diagram is almost essential to diagnosing the problem. There is likely to be a relay controlling the supply to the fuel pump but what controls the relay? If the relay is controlled by the engine ECU there will be no supply until the immobiliser is disarmed.

If the vehicle was presented to me I would check for a spark and if a spark is present I would provide a temporary supply to the fuel pump to test if the engine starts, proving the fault is not immobiliser-related but a wiring or switching problem.

    thank you. well yes there is no spark in the plugs as well. does that mean its the immobilizer.

  • Vernon Taylor Jul 19, 2016

    It is likely the immobiliser isn't disarming and of course the new ECU will not work until it has been either coded to the immobiliser security code or has been decoded.

  • asik ansaar ali Jul 19, 2016

    is it possible to disarm the immobilizer

  • Vernon Taylor Jul 19, 2016

    Usually no except by using a correctly coded transponder (key or remote) or by having a specialist decode the system.

SOURCE: 1996 mazda mx6 ls cranks but won't start

you may need to run a wire from a keyed ignition source that has power while cranking and running to the fuel pump relay and bypass the pcm to test wether it will run, if it runs put a more permanent wire in place.Not too sure what tests youve done but it seems that fuel is what your focusing on so a quick test is too spray engine start up the intake tube to see if the engine trys to run if it does it eliminates a lot of other potential reasons for a no start condition.Also try squeezing the fuel return line to see if the added pressure will try to make engine run.Could be time to replace fuel pump etc anyway let me know how it goes good luck with it

This is a bad PCM. Try to disconnect the security system first and if it still does not start then it is the PCM.

SOURCE: 1999 silverado 4.3 cranks but

First check to see if full battery voltage is even getting to the "Pos" (+) positive side of the ignition coil when the key is in the "Run" position, and also that full battery voltage is getting through the "Pos" (+) or positive side of the ignition coil and over to the distributor ignition module

The ignition module and the pick-up coil/stator located inside of the distributor is what generates the signal that the ECM (Engine Control Module) uses to time and fire the fuel injectors, as well as the signal to run the fuel pump and the dwell signal timing to fire the ignition coil, and a faulty ignition module can cause any one of these systems to malfunction.

That does sound like a malfunction with the ignition module inside of the distributor, and you can remove the ignition module and have it tested for free at most auto part stores. If the ignition module does test out alright then the problem could still be in the pick-up coil/stator, (it can be tested using an ohm meter by dis-connecting the wire connector from the pick-up coil/stator and the ohm reading between the two wires from the pick-up coil/stator should be between 500 and 1500 ohm's, and both of the wires from the pick-up coil/stator should show an open loop or an infinite reading between each wire and ground) and if the pick-up coil/stator is found to be faulty then replace the entire distributor, or the distributor will have to be dis-assembled to install a new pick-up coil/stator.

If you do purchase a new ignition module be sure that it does come with a silicone grease or a die-electric compound because it is a heat sink and the ignition module will burn up without it.

To install the new ignition module first clean out the mounting surface inside of the distributor. Then completely coat the metal contact surface under the ignition module with a thick coat the silicone grease or die-electric compound and do not leave any of the metal contact surface of the ignition module un-coated with the silicone grease or die-electric compound, and be very careful not to over-tighten the ignition module or it will be damaged.

To replace the distributor follow this procedure;

The ignition timing is not adjusted with a timing light or with the engine running, and to set the ignition timing follow these procedures.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. This "static" timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.

Removal;

1. With the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing indicating the number one position.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the number one mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, Then make a reference mark of the position that the ignition rotor is pointing to (out on the engine or firewall) and the more precise you mark the position, the easier the installation of the new distributor will be. This will be reference mark #1.

4. Remove the distributor lock down bolt, (the lock down clamp will most likely be attached to the distributor and if so it should not be removed from the distributor) then slowly lift up on the distributor about three inches and note the direction that the ignition rotor turns, and when the ignition rotor stops turning then mark the position that the ignition rotor is pointing to (out on the engine or firewall) and then lift the distributor striaght up and out, and remove the gasket or any left over gasket material from the intake manifold. The more precise you mark the position the easier it will be to install the new distributor and an assistant might be helpful. This will be reference mark #2

Once the distributor has been removed it is important that the engine does not get cranked over by the starter or the crankshaft turned at all, or the reference marks will become useless.

Installation;

Be sure that the new distributor is complete with a new module and that there is a new gasket in place on the distributor.

1. Lower the distributor with gasket down into the distrbutor well and align the ignition rotor with the #2 reference mark and when the distributor gear engages the drive gear on the camshaft then the ignition rotor should turn to the #1 reference mark as the distributor sets all the way back down flush on the intake manifold.

2. Install and tighten the lock down bolt, and If the distributor is properly installed then the ignition rotor should be pointing to the #1 reference mark and the #1 position on the distributor housing with the engine on top dead center.

Replace the distributor cap and connect the spark plug wires, and see if the engine will start, if the engine does start and the check engine light does not come on (assuming that it was not on before) then the distributor is properly installed and there is no further timing requirements.

Let me know if you require any further assistance.

SOURCE: I have 2005 Nissan altima that wont start. It

Nissans are known to have problems with ignition coils which would not show up on code reader. I would start with that. Pull a plug and hold it to ground to see how strong the spark is while turning engine over. If the plugs are wet when you take them out then you can be sure it is in all probability related to coils.

Why doesn't it crank or start?

Check battery connections and voltage. fuel pump only runs for a few seconds to start and runs again while cranking.

I have1988 Toyota pickup no fuel pressure. Checked

Friend, I know these Toyota Pickups inside out. Since you know the fuel pump is good, and has a clean fuel filter, then use a test light on the power side of the fuse and crank the engine over. If you don't have power to turn on the test light bulb, then the problem is in wiring between switch and fuse. Being EFI, the computer tells it when to power the pump. May not have power the first crank, cause is clearing, but ALWAYS power on second crank to start. The fuel still in the injector rail will be used first, no power on first crank, then once the pressure drops when that fuel is used, computer will make the pump come on.

No power at fuel pump

Sounds frustrating. Presumably you've also checked the fuse panel for blown fuses? Check to be sure you're at least getting power to the fuse, that will at least narrow down a problem before the fuse or after.

Changed the fuel pump in 2001 ford Taurus afterwards car wont do anything, not even attempt to crank and i don't hear the fuel pump prime.

Is battery fully charged? And possibly could be fuel regulator also. There is a YouTube video about something like this...vacuum line might have a hole and fuel pump may have connections backwards..

1999 silverado 2500 6.0 motor wont start

If the passkey system were not working the engine should not crank and the fuel injectors would be dead. The security light would also stay on.
The fuel pump relay gets battery voltage and also voltage from the key switch. The computer grounds the relay to power the pump.
The crank sensor does not come into play until the engine is cranking and it supplies a signal for the ignition and injector pulse.
Are you not getting power from the key switch to the relay, or from the battery side to the relay ?

HOW CAN I CHECK MY FUEL PUMP TO SEE IF IT GONE BAD BECAUSE MY CAR WANT CRANK....

Even if the fuel pump is bad it wont prevent the car from cranking. If the fuel pump is bad the car will still crank, it just wont start. If the car won't crank you need to first check the battery and battery connections. If the battery is charged and the connections are good then you need to check the fuses and make sure none are blown. If all good then you need to make sure power is getting to the starter. If it is then you may have an ignition problem. It's definitely an electrical problem, not a fuel problem.

2004 Toyota Rav 4.....I change a battery out for a new one now the car doesnt start, it cranks but thats all it does all the lights and electronic functions work but doesnt start.

you have to check for a burnt fuse , maybe an ignition, fuel pump fuse, hear the pump starting, checkfor pressure at the fuel rail, if ok, check for spark going to the spark plugs if there is not it can be a faulty crank sensor

My 1994 Camry cranks but wont fully start

As you are finding out ....this is how you kill a car. You need fuel, spark, compression, and air to run an engine. Look for spark and fuel items to be working. A computer controls much of the spark part. They canbe sensitve electrically. If you are cranking ..starter sounds ok. Alt. will act up after you get started. concentrate on spark and spark control. Fuel and fuel control. This is what you need to start.
