The shifter cable should be attached to the top of the transmission under the hood.

2004 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6. The EGR valve, can that make your car not shift? It comes on flashing 'Overdrive Off' and then doesn't want to shift or move.

Question edited for clarity and add punctuation.
Question moved to model category.

No, the EGR Valve recirculates exhaust gases to burn them a bit more and has no link to the transmission. You need an auto electrician or a transmission specialist.

2004 ford explorer truck will start will go through all gears but wont move. Cant even feel the transmission sliding into gear. There is no little jerk when you pull it out of park. Any ideas?

If you don't feel the clicks going threw the gears, the shift cable could be broken. Could be the detent in the transmission. This would go in gear though. Next would be the transmission died.

I have a 2004 ford freestar. Was running fine. Got in it and will start, I can move the shifter through gears but will not move. Was told everything from whole transmission, sensor or cable. Ideas??

If you feel it click threw the gears on the shifter, the cable is fine. No click, the cable came off or broke. Clicking would be a transmission problem could be several different things. But Ford did have a problem with the servo. You can access it from the bottom. Looks like a cup with 3 bolts mounted to the transmission. I replaced the seals and springs in it.

How do I get my 2002 4x4 ford explorer out of park ? please can you help

Sounds like the shift cable has broken and not allowing the gear shift to move the lever on the transmission.

1991 Ford F150 won't shift into park or reverse. Will go into neutral and drive, and the linkage at the transmission moves ok

The linkage may be out of adjustment preventing the shifter from moving into reverse or park.
One way to test this is to disconnect the linkage and manually move the lever on the transmision making sure that it can be set into park. Also try moving the lever counting each click from park to low gear to make sure it is clicking into each gear. If this works then the linkage is probably out of adjustment.
On the link cable there is typically a bolt in an oval shaped metal near the transmission shift lever.
1)Detach the shift cable from the transmission shift lever
2)Put the transmision shift lever in the park position, and also the shifter in the cab
3)Loosen the adjustment bolt
4)Reattach the cable to the lever
5)Tighten the adjustment bolt in place
6)Confirm that you can shift through all of the gears
Hope this helps

I have a 2004 ford explorer xlt the gear shift broke when i went to put it on drive...how is that possible???

hello! will try to assist! you may have a broken shifter cable.when you turn the key to 'on' or 'start' the shifter just moves sloppy,or easily. right? thats a sign of broken shifter cable.i have a 1994 explorer 4x4 there is a shifter cable to your transmission, sometimes they break. the cable will need to be replaced. you can purchase new or used, but if you're going to keep the truck, buy it new. the older fords had a metal linkage to the transmission, without the push button 4x4 option. the new ones have a cable shifter, just another way to get into our pocket book. try this with 2 people [for safety] put your emergency brake on,turn key switch on. have someone,or you, look under the driverside of truck up at the transmission shifter cable to see if it's moving on the side of the transmission.whoevers setting in the drivers seat will have to move the shifter from park to low, with the emergency brake on so the truck does'nt move or their foot on the brake, that works too. just make sure your safe as the truck cannot move while the person's shifting the gears while you look under the truck for shifter movement on the transmission.if no movement on the transmission while the gears are shifted, the cables broken. there,i went through the steps to insure your safety, and to give you a solution. just always be safe when you're under or around a vehicle that you're trying to repair.remember this always!the vehicle can be replaced, you can not! thank you for choosing fixya com and i look forward to assisting you in the future.
