Blower fan on 2000 Mercury Grand Markee won't function

Fan stopped working and when we looked under hood and started checking the wiring it came on. it did this on and off for a week then it stopped all together and we could not get it started. I took a wire and ran a ground from battery to where the black wire snaps into the harness. The fan came on and has been running. The problem is I can't turn it off or up and down with the dash controls. The only way to stop it is to unplug the ground I ran. Is this a common problem? Do you know what is wrong?

Dodge caravan air conditioning fan not blowing

I would turn the fan on with the van off and listen to see if just the blower is working at all or a slower speed. . If you have a volt meter you could make sure it was getting power by unplugging the wire to it and testing there.. If you have power then the blower motor is the problem . If it was a resister it would not work at all normally. or it would work on one speed but not another speed in most cases.. I would think by the age of it more likely a bad blower fan motor .the part is about 73 dollars to replace complete with fan and the resisters are 15-20 at your local auto parts store .
This could also be a wire harness issue with the resister plug which supplies the power to the blower . it very common that the wires got hot and melted from old age or from a blower that was old and drawing too much power .The resister and harness or located under the hood on the firewall of the passenger side of the van .Yes there is a fuse for the blower fan under the dash .If it has blown it could be the blower drawing too much power.or other issues .
Yes we sure do feel the heat here in Florida .

2000 grand marquis fan not working at any speed

Hello, This usually means the fan speed module (ballast resisitor) is bad. Look under the hood and find your wires from the fan motor. Follow the wires across the Firewall and when you find a connector, that part is the module. Unplug the connector, change the part and it should be good as new.

You might try tapping this part with the handle of a screwdriver and see if it starts working again, before you buy a new part.

Heater won't go off

Hi,

If you're referring to the heater "FAN" running continuously, then its likely to be your blower motor resistor.

The heater blower motor (under the dash) has constant power supplied from the battery, but is controlled by the blower "resistor" - usually mounted on the blower motor assembly. If one or more of the blower resistor coil wires are faulty, the motor will either not work on one of the fan settings, or will constantly run by itself.

Air condition and heater will work but the blower fan will not come on.2000 Mercury Grand Marquis

First, check your fuses. The part that goes out the most is the blower motor resistor. This part is under the hood. You start at the blower motor and trace its wires across the Firewall until you see a plug-in. This plug-in has 2 screws and 1 electric connector. You can try tapping on the connector and see if the blower starts working.

The part itself is the size of a pack of cigarettes with 90% hidden in the ductwork. There may be a heater line coming off the motor and it will be in the way when you try to remove the part. You best bet is to work on a cold motor, remove the connector, and test the new replacement part by plugging the connector into the part before installation.

When you find that the new part works, you can set it aside and remove the mounting screws on the old part. You will need to pull the rear hose for the heater out of your way temporarily. By working on a cold motor and leaving the hose removal for last, you will minimize the loss of antifreeze and the mess that follows. Then just switch parts and all should be like new.
