DO you have a diagram OBD1 plug?
If you google Ford OBD1 you can get the plug configuration and also the list of trouble codes. On some models the plug is on the firewall in the engine compartment. Some Escort models are Ford based and some are Mazda based. Anything from 1996 back requires a scanner to retrieve the codes.
In 1996 everybody switched over to OBD2 which is under the dash near the steering column and those require a scanner also.
