95 park avenue, how do I read the obd1 codes thru the car

95 park avenue has obd2 plug with obd1 system,
Can I use a jumper to activate the on board diagnostics ?
If so, which ones do I jumps?

  • alcantarone May 13, 2009

You are correct about the link connectors. But for 95 models, obd2 scanner will not work due to it is a obd1 system with an odb2 plug.

I have had several different companies try and were unsuccessful.

I am now thinking about finding a jumper that will go from obd1 male to obd2 female. This way someone with a obd1 scanner can plug up the obd2 plug and read my codes. What do you think?

You have a obd2 it has 16 data link connector you have to use scanner to get codes.now the obd1 system have 12 data link connectors..the top two at far right is where you put jumper wire to retrieve code.

you need obd1 scanner .or you can use a jump wire.you need a code book or manual .to look up code if you use jumper wire.

Trying to find a OBD l scanner for a 95 dodge Dakota for under a $100.00, or can I use a OBD ll scanner with an OBD l adapter and achieve the ability to read and clear codes?

An OBD2 scanner can sometimes read an odd OBD1 code but there is no consistency. The OBD2 system is designed to be universal but only as far as faults that can affect exhaust emissions - other faults on the OBD2 system and the OBD1 system are manufacturer/model specific and require either dedicated diagnostic equipment or some very comprehensive software.

Finding a OBD1 code reader

Pre 1996 vehicles with obd 1 used a simple jumper between two contacts in the plug then you counted blinks on the check engine light. Google the specific pins to jump for your particular vehicle.

Can I retrieve codes manually from a 95 bonneville

If it has OBD1 for a diagnostic system you can get the trouble codes by making the check engine light flash.
If it has OBD2 you'll need a scanner or code reader. Most auto parts stores will check OBD2 for free in hopes of selling you some parts.
You can do an internet search for OBD1 codes and see if the connector plug looks like yours. If it does you can use a paper clip to jumper two connectors and make the warning light flash.
1994 and 1995 were cross-over years when the car companies switched from OBD1 to OBD2 so each model switched at a different time.

How to get code without obd1

A 1995 model Buick should be OBD2 which would require a scanner or code reader. If it is an OBD1 system you can jumper two terminals on the test plug to make the warning light flash.
