Hot engine, cold or both? hot is 180F+ !
ticks = idle speed, (very old name for idle, but im very old)
low idle speed has many causes. (over 50 in fact)
but has 3 modal causes:
1: ISC valve stuck. (idle speed control valve) clean it?
2: in limphome mode, suzuki cuts idle controls then. suzuki name officiall for this is Failsafe mode, CEL glowing , is it?
the check engine light on? ( ignored?)
3: engine power way to weak even egr valve stuck open.
#3 has vast causes... huge? we do simple tests to avoid guessing all 50.

this is pure physics:
engine weak, or idle controls dead.
do tell if engine has full power up hills. (kinda key that)
do tell if you press throttle its easy to get normal 800 rpm. or more.
cheers !

slow , in park or drive or what gear?
slow is engine hot or cold.
Slow idle has over 50 causes.
    we use Occam's razor .https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam%27s_...
    to solve systems this complex.
    engine EFI spark.

to use occams , we subtract what it cant be.
its probably not the transmission> back, bad,
and is in fact and engine problem.
(we narrowed the field now, it's now flat tires)
so what savvy tech does. is do tests and to gathers evidence, to do more razor cuts!
see? until your at clause 1 of 50.
but you can guess or test,
    there is no other way.
Ive see DIY spends thousands, and the buy a scan tool and behold, more evidence and even the cause.

    my wild guess now.
the spark plugs are no good and you didnt notice the gross misfirng and shaking engine.

    free Evidence,3:
if you gently press throttle can you get a normal idle speed, say 800rpm>
and is it a smooth idle.? or misfires.?

so we can't help you much lacking all these facts and full symptoms.
we dont have the 1.2L here.
    so cant get too savvy.

    now physics answer:
bad engine. misfires bad or too weak. (huge list of causes here)
    bad spark , misfires.
bad fueling too weak and runs slow or floods and fouls spark plugs and runs slow
    ISC not working (air supply)
ECU in limphome mode and idle controls shut down on purpose. scan it, no scan it again.

Stalls when slowing down

check idle speed sensor as the motor is still under load while slowing down. Try placing tranny in neutral before slowing down and see if that improves the situation. Check the idle speed while stationary and in gear. It should drop 100-200 rpm under neutral idle but any more and I would be looking at idle speed sensor .

2000 mercury villager, runs a fast idle. whether cold or warm the idle remains at a high idle speed, it even pulls with the brake applied.

Could be a vac leak, or a dirty throttle body, or a faulty idle air control valve. The computer controls idle speed by regulating the amount of air into the intake. Could also be something pulling on the throttle cable such as the cruise control.

2004 chrysler sebring idle speed is too slow. HOw

why do you want your rpms higher while idling? you don't want them high because your gas bill will reflect that. slow shouldn't matter but if it's dying while on idle it could either be your mass air flow sensor or your fuel filter being clogged

My 1996 Toyota Previa shimmeys when it is stopped;when

check the tick over speed if its slow, less than 850 950 rpm in gear that why it shimmeys,, the engine is trying to stall in gear,,,if you need to bring up the tick over speed have some body in the car holding the brakes down for you as it needs to be ajusted with the car in gear,,and running yourself over hurts??? the car should just creep forwards with the engine runing in gear with the brake off,,,tickover speed of 950rpm

Erratic idle on tick over or when slowing to a stop

I assume petrol? If yes then it sounds like the idle control valve, these are common on VAG

Tick over nearly 2000rpm on my 1993 renault espace

The idle speed is controlled by the idle control valve on the front right of the engine. If this gets stuck the ecu has no control over the idle speed. This is indicated by an erratic idle speed which increases as the engine gets warm. Alternatively there may be an air leak on the inlet manifold. Listen for any sucking noises around the manifold or look for any hoses which may have come off. Finally check that the throttle is fully closing and activating the idle switch when the accelerator pedal is released.

Sounds like you may have a worn out CV joint and the clicking may stop with an oil change. Good Luck

Engine Reving excessively

1. Engine on-dissconect the power lead to the [idle speed control valve] located on top of the engine.
2. turn engine off-
3. turn engine on, you may need to use throttle to start and to reach and hold tick over speed. Once tick over is achieved, re-connect the power lead the idle speed control valve.

You should now have normal tick over speed!
