SOURCE: how to adjust carburator of toyota corolla 1991
Try to look for a screw 'stop' for controlling the angle of the opening of the throttle plate on the carburetor. Adjust this screw to keep the engine from stopping while at idle.

This sounds like one of 3 things. I would say that the most likely would be the Mass Air Flow sensor is bad. The second most likely is the Throttle Positioning Sensor. And if not that then the possibly the Manifold Air Pressure Sensor. But all three of these should have the check engine light on. If so you can take the van to Autozone and they will run diagnostics on the computer for free and tell you what codes the computer has stored. It should have one of the three sensors stored. It may have other codes like misfire on left bank or running lean on right bank or something. But the sensors will cause this. If the check engine light is not on then it is going to be more than likely a fuel problem. Like a plugged up fuel filter or the fuel pump getting weak. If all that you get on the codes is a random misfire, then it will be the spark plugs.
