The shifter in Park can wiggle back in forth - 1999 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner

Try wiggling the steering wheel back and forth as you try to turn the key. Sometimes the lock rod will bind a little on the lock plate inside the steering wheel which will inhibit the removal of the key

the ignition module (ignition switch on top of the steering column) normally doesn't get stuck.

things you can try:
steering wheel lock: (the pin gets a "burr" on it and locks everything up) wiggle steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn key.

transmission lock (parking on an incline will jam up the interlock)
push the shifter farther into park while trying to turn the key, or wiggle shifter

Wiggle your steering wheel back and forth until the shifter moves. Make sure key is on and brake is depressed. If you park on a hill you should set your parking brake before releasing brake pedal so the weight of your car is sitting on that and not your transmission.

I JUST HAD THIS PROBLEM......ALL U GOTTA DO IS, JUST MOVE YOUR GEAR SHIFTER FROM PARK TO THE LAST GEAR.....KEEP DOING THIS WHILE TRYING TO WIGGLE THE KEY OUT.

there is a sensor attached to the brake pedal that unlocks the shifter can be bad or loose. Sometime wiggling the wheel back and forth will unlock the shifter and ignition. Also pressing the lever up past park will usually unlock it as well

Probably a stretched shifter cable/mechanism.

Try moving the gearshift from Park to Drive or all the way to 1 and then back. Make sure it is all the way into Park. Then ease keylock back and forth with some wiggling. Depending on how old the car is and how worn there may be too much play in the components which is not unlocking the ignition mechanism.

the shifter needs adjusting. try to remove the key while moving the shifter back and forth in park.

If automatic, try moving shifter into park a little harder. Step hard on brake pedal, & try wiggle wheel back & forth while trying to get key to turn all the way to off. Not parked on a slope, or wheels cranked one way of the other are you ?
