Could be caliper/s or brake hose/s. Easiest way to tell is release the brake hose from the caliper. If it releases, the hose is clogged/collapsed. If it doesn't it's the caliper.
Hi Tommy, I'm glad to help! There are only 5 things that can cause brakes to hold: (1) Calipers are sticking. NOTE: There are several reasons calipers stick, there are internally frozen meaning you need new calipers. Here's how to check them release the nut that holds the hose to the caliper when the fluid bleed out and the calipers do not release pressure from the brakes then they are internally frozen, replace them. (2) Hose's are calapsed internally. You check the hoses in the same way, release the bolt and if the calipers DO Release pressure from the brakes then you know it's the hoses. (3) The actual metal lines going to the back of the Vehicle could be damaged. Example: One time one of the rear brakes would not release pressure and I found where the line goes acroos the rear axle something had hit the line and smashed it flat and so it was holding brake pressure on the wheel. (4) Let's not forget how much dirt and grime builds up on the brakes themselves. Example: I found one time where the LANDS where the brake shoes slide were so dirty that the brake pad itself was stuck and holding the brake pressure on that wheel. (5) The Master Cylinder, not very often, but I have seen the ports in the master cylinder clog-up and will not bleed back to release brake pressure. This is a few thing for you to check out that will help you find the problem yourself and save you money. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Tommy.
Engine should be off and pump brake about 4 times to release pressure, then bleed,driver side rear,passenger side rear,passenger side front,then driver's side front,use a bleeder kit.If pressure won't hold and you have drum brakes,remove both rear hubs and check wheel cylinders for leakage.Check flexable fuel lines at wheels and it could be a bad brake master cylinder.
If releasing the parking brake does not get the rear wheels to release, then you either have a parking brake cable that is badly corroded and sticking, or you have internal problems in the rear brakes like broken springs, etc that are jamming the brakes. You will have to inspect your rear brakes and paking brake cables to find out which it is.
You should be able to pull on the parking brake cable and get movement easily. It depends on if your Caravan is equipped with front disc and rear drum brakes or if it is equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes. If it has 4-wheel disc, then you could also have a bad rear caliper.
Hello, The rear rotor has 2 sets of brakes on it. The other thing is to look for slight movement in the driveshaft when it clunks. Depending on the rearend, some have to have both rear wheels off the ground to turn each side. And of course the trans in Neutral.
With the rear wheel you have an Emergency brake and a drum brake inside the center of the Rotor.
The rear of the brake backing plate has a rubber plug which is covering the Star-wheel adjustment for those drum brakes. You can try to loosen the Star-wheel to disengage the Emergency brake shoes. You can try pulling the brake cables toward the cab, to loosen the cables.
If this does not help, your Emergency brake shoe probably rusted off the brake mount and is jammed inside the drum. The linings fall off the metal like banana skins. I can tell you that if the Emergency brakes are a State safety requirement, you need to consider new rotors because the drum portion is usually trashed with rust.
this could be caused by a few things, first you need to jack the truck up you will need all 4 wheels off the ground, put the transmission in neutral and have some one get in the truck and wile turning each wheel have the person in the truck push the brake pedal the wheel should stop instantly then have the person release the brake the brake should release instantly,( do this to each wheel ) if all brakes remain locked ( wont release instantly ) then replace the master cylinder if the both rear brakes wont release instantly replace the brake hose from the frame to the rear differential, if the both front brakes wont release replace master cylinder, if only one front brake wont release open the bleeder on that brake caliper if the wheel releases replace the caliper hose if the brake still wont release with the bleeder open replace the caliper, you should replace the caliper and brake hoses as a pair.
YOU NEED TO ADJUST REAR PARKING BRAKE AT THE LEVER.FIRST OF ALL YOU NEED TO BLOCK FRONT WHEELS.THEN RAISE THE REAR OF THE VECHICLE.SUPPORT WITH JACK STANDS.MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON HARD LEVEL SOLID GROUND WHEN USING JACK STANDS.AFTER RAISING THE CAR SET PARKING BRAKE 1 CLICK TOWARD ENGAGEMENT.REMOVE FLOOR CONSOLE.TIGHTEN THE ADJUSTING NUT UNTIL THE PARKING BRAKES DRAG SLIGHTLY WHEN THE REAR WHEELS ARE TURNED.RELEASE THE PARKING BRAKE COMPLETELY.CHECK IG PARKING BRAKES DRAG WHEN REAR WHEELS ARE TURNED.READJUST IT NECESSARY UNTIL THERE IS NO BRAKE DRAG FROM THE PARKING BRAKES.
Do you have drum or disc rear brakes? If drum, the wheel cylinder probably needs to be replaced. If the wheel has overheated at any time, you should also replace the hardware (springs, etc) as they can lose their ability to retract the shoes if overheated. If disc brakes on rear, then the caliper is probably to blame. Has the brake fluid ever been changed? Fluid absorbs moisture (never use brake fluid from an open or not tightly sealed container). After rebuilding or replacing the caliper or wheel cyl. bleed all 4 wheels to flush out old fluid, otherwise you may have other wheels w/ brakes dragging/not releasing. The automatic (vacuum) release-type is standard equipment on all vehicles.
The automatic vacuum-type parking brake system contains the following features:
A parking brake release control motor (2A843) with mounting bracket bolted to the parking brake control .
The vacuum-actuated diaphragm within the parking brake release control motor which is connected by a rod to the upper end of the parking brake release vacuum hose (2B653) .
The parking brake release vacuum hose which connects the parking brake release control motor to the engine manifold through a vacuum release switch at the steering column tube (3514) .
The parking brake release control motor which is actuated to release the parking brake whenever the engine is running and the transmission is in a forward-driving gear.
The automatic parking brake control which has a manual release feature that releases the foot parking brake control by applying force to the parking brake control pedal in the "apply" direction to the point of initial application.
The parking brake control will return to the full-release position after removing the force.
