You can try inserting the key into the ignition, turning it to the run position (without trying to start it), and switch the valet switch on. Turn the ignition off and try to start the SUV. If that doesn't work the remote will need to be fixed. Either replace the battery or have the remote replaced. If the problem is within the alarm control module. you may need to have it removed or replaced. The system can not be bypassed. If you have other questions, please feel free to write back. Good luck.
check door locks fuses and relays.if all is good and you cant operate door lock buttons manually problem could be in the generic electronic module.if door locks dont work from the remote battery could be dead in remote transmitter.try to reset door locks control module first obtain all remote transmitter.sit inside vechicle with all doors closed.switch ignition from off to on 8 times in 10 seconds. doors should lock then unlock.when this procedure works then press any button on any of the remote transmitter doors should lock and unlock.if all fails let dealership fix..

I had what sounds like the same problem on a 2001 GTI VR6 and found that the solder joints on the driver's side door lock module were cracked. I removed the module and resoldered the joints. This corrected the remote functions, key in and lights on dinging and dome lights lighting when the door is opened. Still working on correcting the power mirrors but everything else is working again.
This URL has excellent instructions for removing the module. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1015107
