Idle Problem When idling, even after the engine has warmed up, the idle frequently becomes very erratic, jumping between 500 and 1000 rpm. Occasionally, when the idle drops rapidly, the engine nearly dies but then suddenly springs back to life and jumps forward if still in Drive. Not sure if this is related, but the motor has died on occasion when backing up, but only when I'm in reverse and have let off the gas to let the car coast. Also died once when the front tires started spinning on some ice. I gave it some gas, the tires started spinning, and when I let off the gas, the motor slowed down and die. Again, not sure if this is related to the idle problem. Thanks, Jason

98 ford explorer erratic idle from cold reves jump. ok when warm but still stalls at times.

check the airflow meter it may be stuck and make sure the electrical connection to it is not loose and also check the hose leading to it are not loose or cracked they tend to crack at the bottom where you cannot see it unless you remove it and check

Try to disconnect the Air Flow Meter. It is the first plug just before the air filter/air intake box. If this improves your situation you will need to source a new or aftermarket Air Flow Meter.
