SOURCE: 97 Land Cruiser Oil Leak,Rear Seal?

sounds like your lower gasket is shot, and while under pressure its slowly leaking through a cracked gasket try getting gasket sealent and put on seal crack let it sit for a day or 2 it should obsorb in and fix the gasket that should probably do the trick

SOURCE: 1991 chevy silverado 1500 2-wd leaking oil seals, rear end.

the outer bearings can be driven in using a suitable Very Large socket. Removing the old ones either requires a puller or a cutting torch. I use either depending on the state of the bearings.
when driving new ones in, make sure

  1. your socket wont jam in with the bearing
  2. you only hit against the outer bearing shell
  3. you keep it very straight
  4. hit it til you hear a resounding solid clunk as the bearing reaches full insertion.
  5. you fit a new oil seal
  6. use a block of wood across the oil seal face to protect it as you knock it in - keep it straight!
To answer the other question, yes you do have to remove the driveshaft to replace the oil seal. the Diff ack-plate has to be removed, the locking horseshoes from the ends of the driveshaft, & the wheels. It takes about 1 hour to remove them & clean the backplate. about another to reassemble.
I charge about $140 plus parts

SOURCE: rear main seal leaks..does this affect transmission??

A leaking rear main seal will not cause your transmission to leak.

The transmission has its own seal and should not leak because of the engine rear main seal.

Due to the labor involved in replacing the rear main seal on the engine, it is best if you replace the front transmission seal at the same time if possible.

Installation varies on different vehicles but the principles are the same.

2001 chevy blazer, no plug on rear axle to check fluid level.

A Chevy rear end or differential is filled through a plug. There is no provision for draining it, however, other than removing the rear cover. If it requires differential oil and the rear cover had not been removed for service, there is obviously a leak in a seal. At the same time, the fluid does not get contaminated and should not need to be changed under normal circumstances.

Oil leaks under a 1997 super saloon automatic . leaks below bell housing

Could be a couple of possibilities that you'll have to get into looking for. Rear oil pan seal, rear main seal or occasionally rear intake seal will leak down back side of engine. Wipe down motor or spray w/brake clean and watch for leak.

there is a plate on back of the engine that can leak, but it will appear like the oil pan or rear main seal is leaking. you will need to clean any residue off and then check it out.

Oil leak

What is the mileage on your car? Is your engine a 2.5 L?
Clean the bottom side of your engine with engine degreaser first to determine exactly where it's leaking. Run your engine at idle speed for fifteen minutes, then inspect the bottom towards the front of engine. If you see a drip on the drivers side center, don't waste your time or money replacing the crankshaft seal or oil pump / pump seals. I have recently done that and still have a leak........coming from where......who knows! I have posted a question on this site, hopefully someone can answer for both of us. I know we're not the only ones with the same problem on this year and model.
