I have a well maintained 2008 F-150 with 140,000 miles. Just yesterday while passing a slow vehicle and kicked it into the passing gear, the engine started to miss and sputter. The engine light began to flash on and off. I pulled over and let it idle and the check engine light went off and appeared to run smooth. I finished driving home. Today on my way to work it did the exact same thing while passing. Had the same issues, sputtering, light and soon as I pulled over the light would go off. I took it to my mechanic and did a diagnostic on it and no codes showed up. Please help.

when was the last tune up done and fuel filter was changed?
there is no spark plug wires I had to replace the boot for the number one cylinder on a 2000 expedition that was also having the same problem if the check engine light is on take it to auto zone and they will put it on a tester free of charge and I hope and pray that it is not the problem like the one I am working on right now I am replacing the upper and lower intake gaskets

change the fuel filter. and clean the mass air flow sensor usein a can of carb cleaner from any parts shop. depending on the miles on your car the timing belt mit have jumped a tooth. have to change it every 120.000 km.

have the vehicle scanned for error codes at autozone, its free. Post codes for more help....These engines have issues with the COPs (ignition coils-over-plugs) failing prior to 80k miles. When they fail typical problems are: Sputtering under load/acceleration, rough idle, random misfires, random stalling, light or heavy jerking under load (usually at 15-35mph and 45-65mph)..hopefully this helps!!

The brake pedal issue is a lack of vacuum in the engine while not idling properly. There are quite a few reasons for this issue. I would have the engine codes read first to see if you have a fault code for any of the sensors. It could be any of the following, Map Sensor, TPS Sensor, O2 sensor, Temp Sensor, Fuel pressure regulator, Air intake Temp, fuel pump, broken wire, bad connection or a few other things.
Have the codes checked first to help rule out some of the more expensive items.
Throttle Body Cleaning on vehicles without electronic throttle control (most 2003 and down)
You can in most cases repair this slow speed stall or unstable idle by cleaning the engine throttle valve and the idle speed control valve using a product called CRC Spray Throttle valve cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the air intake of the engine with the hose removed from the throttle body, the engine will try to stall so hold up the idle speed manually. Once you have used up about 1/2 can of the cleaner stall the engine out while spraying and turn the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnect and drive the car for a about 25 miles of varied driving modes. If this doesn't cure the problem you may need the fuel injectors professionally cleaned by the dealer service dept.

I'm having similar problems what code did the truck throw, it seems it can be several different things, there is also an electronic sending unit on the back frame that can corrode and cause issuers do to dissimilar metals roughing search the utube video I think I have narrowed it down to the catalytic converter being plugged happens every time in go up a hill or step on it it spits and sputters similarily
