Car has the hiccups and rough acceleration!

My 2006 Neon is idling roughly, especially when the air conditioning is on. When I try to accelerate quickly the car hiccups with very jerky motions and no pick-up. The check engine light with flash on when I attempt to accelerate and RMPs will race over 5000 before I can accelerate.

Go to autozone they have a free OBD 2 code reader. Start by finding out what that code is. It might be something as simple as an O2 sensor. Hope this helps.

Rough engine idle under heavy acceleration. After a heavy rain, I started the car and the idle was terribly rough. Changed out the spark plugs and wires. Its much better but the condition still exists...

heh, you might want to change the title here as I am pretty sure you cant idle under heavy acceleration.
However I think you were on the right track with the plugs and wires. You didnt mention the cap though and that is usually the biggest culprit in damp weather. Put a new cap and rotor on it and see if that doesnt do the trick.

My car dies when i put it in gear or when i come to a stop and a rough idle i changed the tps

Idle air control valve would be my next bet , the TPS usually just makes it rough on acceleration. Is it rough on acceleration(loss of power) ?

Engine backfires when accelerating, idles rough but runs fine over 50+ miles per hour.

Idle is rough because not a right Air/ Gas mixture.
The ideal air /gas ratio is 14.6:1. If less than that it has rich mixture. If it more then that it has a lean mixture.
Back fire happens when accelerated because of of rich mixture pumped out at exhaust cycle is burning.
At speed above 40 miles/hour, temperature and fast compression cycle make the problem is less obvious.
Cheap first shot is to replace the air filter to correct this ratio. If it doesn't help, need Fuel distributor service. ( However people like to make easy money from you first, they will convince you for a turn up) Good Luck. I'll check back to see how the progress going.

Rough idle, backfire on acceleration

check everything you can under the hood your air intake system all of it especially make sure all clamps are tight .. and make sure all vacuum hoses are good and not cracking or broken or just loose . you might run a little fuel cleaner through a tank of gas too cleaning the engine fuel system up some. just a few ideas.. Symptoms of a P0118 could include:

* Very poor fuel economy
* A no start condition
* Vehicle may start, but run very poorly, blowing black smoke, running very rough and misfiring
* Illumination of MIL
EGR valve

Usually a fault in the control circuit, will leave no noticeable symptoms other than the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination. However, if the EGR control solenoid
is stuck open due to debris, etc. the code may be accompanied by misfire under acceleration, rough idle, or engine dying altogether.
