Transmission idles up when put in gear

When putting the automatic transmission in gear, it idles up. When put back in nuetral or park it idles down. I changed the filter in the transmission, the pan had a lot of metal in it. The fluid and filter change had no effect on the problem. Can you help or have any ideas? Regards...........Wayne

Need help Adjusting automatic shifting cables on 2010 cobalt ls

Put the Trans in park then adjust the cable so the shifter is in park. Then shift to nuetral and make sure the Trans is also in nuetral. Adjust as necessary. Using park and nuetral as alignment points should result in the shift linkage being in the correct position for all gears.

The idle drops when i put it in gear almost stalling the engine

That is normal, in park or neutral there is no resistance on the engine when you put it in gear there is resistance because the car wants to move. Also when you turn on the ac that turns on the compressor that is run off the belts of the engine so it puts more resistance on the engine. Low idle is not a problem unless the engine dies.
