SOURCE: car stalls, oil light comes on, smoke from under hood

sound like the overheating of the engine did some internal damage. ethier an intake or head gasket or maybe even a warped or cracked head. worse case senero would be a cracked block. check the oil see if it looks milky like a grey sludge. most likely it is a head gasket. have a leak down test preformed to confirm. the labor for the head gaskets is 9 hours for 1 or 11.5 for 2. I would replace both and have the mechanic check the heads and block for cracks while he has it apart.

SOURCE: Gas smell coming from under the hood

it could be your head gaskets and thermostat going bad. those have to be fixed or your car will overheat and will cost tons of money to fixed...just went through the same thing

SOURCE: 2003 Saturn, DOHC V6, burning smell in interior after car warms.

if the smell only comes on when the heater is on try pulling the blower motor mice like to build nests in the blower motor housing.

SOURCE: burning smell under the hood and light came on

Your main issue here is that the coolant was low. Check system for leaks (system includes anywhere coolant flows through or to including all engine gaskets etc) very carefully to find any seepage and correct whatever you find. Burning smell is likely related and either you will find exactly where the smell was coming from while looking for the coolant leak, lor as the engine cooled down when you added fluid the source disappeared. (oil residue on engine will smell when it becomes hot)

SOURCE: Burning smell, check engine light-misfire, rough idle 96 cavalier

Sounds like there is a blown piston, to be sure have a compression test done on that #2 cylinder, if the reading is low, then you'll know.
A friend of mine had a 95 that did simular things only a little more,
it started smoking, dash lights flickered, etc. Finally, he had to get rid of it, the piston rod went through the engine block.

Burning plastic smell from under hood

You will need to check where the liquid is coming from, It may be anything from Air Con, Fuel, Transmission Fluid etc..

The fact you smell burning plastic could be 3 things..

1, Brake pads could smell and burn down if they are on too tight (Had this problem with a trailer). Hence when you apply the brakes it could be squirting brake fluid out due to too much pressure.
- Check brake fluid

2, If the smell and liquid is inside the car (front pass side) it could be the air ducts. Under the dashboard you have air ducts etc for the fans and in car cooling (brother had issue with this)

3, Whatever the fluid is, it could possibly drip onto something hot, unusual for liquid to smell like plastic though, Auto transmission oil smells like fish.

Best bet would be the brakes. Next time you smell it just smell in the wheel mag and see if you can smell it, check the engine fluids often and dont use A/C (Air Con) as that does drip fluid (normal). If it is the brakes smelling you will need to have the lines bled out, tyre places may be able to do this, and possibly new brake pads

Good luck

Smell of burning oil out of heater vents

Have you checked under the hood,Mark? The heater commonly pulls outside air thru the vents and can get air coming up from the engine,so I'd look for a smell outside the car, under the hood.Let me know what you find.
You can alleviate it some by using the recycle air button on your heater, but you need to find the source quickly,so you don't have a fire. don-ohio (:^)

Car runs great with 90000, when it idles theres a slight burning smell and then it disappears as you drive, comes back when idling, any thoughts?

You likely have an oil leak that is running onto something hot. When the car is stopped, the smoke and smell comes out from under the hood and gets drawn inside the car through the air intake just in front of the windshield.
