When car is moving and the front defroster is on, there is a burning smell coming from under the hood.

sound like the overheating of the engine did some internal damage. ethier an intake or head gasket or maybe even a warped or cracked head. worse case senero would be a cracked block. check the oil see if it looks milky like a grey sludge. most likely it is a head gasket. have a leak down test preformed to confirm. the labor for the head gaskets is 9 hours for 1 or 11.5 for 2. I would replace both and have the mechanic check the heads and block for cracks while he has it apart.

it could be your head gaskets and thermostat going bad. those have to be fixed or your car will overheat and will cost tons of money to fixed...just went through the same thing

if the smell only comes on when the heater is on try pulling the blower motor mice like to build nests in the blower motor housing.

Your main issue here is that the coolant was low. Check system for leaks (system includes anywhere coolant flows through or to including all engine gaskets etc) very carefully to find any seepage and correct whatever you find. Burning smell is likely related and either you will find exactly where the smell was coming from while looking for the coolant leak, lor as the engine cooled down when you added fluid the source disappeared. (oil residue on engine will smell when it becomes hot)

Sounds like there is a blown piston, to be sure have a compression test done on that #2 cylinder, if the reading is low, then you'll know.
A friend of mine had a 95 that did simular things only a little more,
it started smoking, dash lights flickered, etc. Finally, he had to get rid of it, the piston rod went through the engine block.
